Steubenville, OH (LifeNews.com) -- Steubenville University takes a back seat to few institutions of higher learning when it comes to honoring the Catholic teachings in which the college and its students are grounded. That's why pro-life students at the Ohio University are perplexed at why Bill Clinton visited the college town Sunday.

During a stop at the town the college is located in, Clinton told attendees that his wife Hillary Clinton is counting on Ohio to help her catch up to pro-abortion Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

However, pro-life students told LifeNews.com that neither the pro-abortion candidates nor Bill Clinton espouse the values of either the university or the surrounding community.

"Bill Clinton's advocacy of radical pro-abortion policies as president are clearly out of the mainstream, especially in the Steubenville area," student Paul Crosby said.

"He is so extreme on abortion that he vetoed -- twice -- the partial birth abortion ban, a procedure in which scissors are jammed into the skull of an infant and the brains are sucked out while being delivered from the mother's womb," Crosby added.

In 2004, John Kerry campaigned in Steubenville and was greeted by over 500 pro-life students, who rejected his support of abortion-on-demand despite his Catholic faith.

Reports of the thousands of people who turned out against Kerry made the national news and Steubenville residents were credited with helping President Bush carry Ohio and, thus, the nation.

"Although Steubenville voters tend to vote Democratic, the majority of Steubenville voters are socially conservative," Crosby told LifeNews.com.

He pointed out that pro-life Democrats tend to do well in the area because of the strongly Catholic and pro-life views of the college students, faculty and surrounding community.
