Las Vegas, NV (LifeNews.com) -- Mitt Romney broke away from the campaigning in South Carolina on Thursday to head to Nevada, where Republicans are voting but the media is paying little attention. At a Las Vegas rally, he told GOP voters that he takes a pro-life position on abortion and that he wants Roe v. Wade overturned.

Romney has taken a pro-life position after years of supporting legalized abortion. He's said he supports a federal human life amendment as a second goal after first toppling Roe and letting state's ban abortions again.

Nevada has a ballot initiative that stat voters approved in 1990 that codified Roe. The language on the ballot initiative (and now in the statutes) provides that abortion is legal in Nevada even if Roe is reversed.

Therefore, unless the people of Nevada vote for a post-Roe state amendment making abortions illegal, the state will continue to guarantee abortion is legal after the Supreme Court overturns the case.

The Las Vegas Review reported that Romney would not give an answer as to whether he would support such an amendment.

"I would welcome a time when the people of America would choose not to have abortions, but that's not where we are now," he said, according to the newspaper.

"I am pro-life, and I would welcome a time when the people of America concluded that abortion was wrong, but that's not where America is, and that's why I believe that the next right step for America is for the court to overturn Roe v. Wade," he added.

"That would return to the states and to the elected representatives of the people the ability to set their own laws related to abortion," the newspaper reported him saying.
