Grand
Rapids, MI (LifeNews.com) -- While Planned Parenthood is making
national news with the opening of an enormous new abortion center near
Chicago, the abortion business is closing some of its facilities in
Michigan. Planned Parenthood of West Michigan and Northern Michigan
is shutting down the centers because of significant funding cuts.
Planned Parenthood says it will close centers in Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Mount Pleasant by the end of the year.
Facilities in White Cloud and Hart closed on Monday in what officials at the abortion business said would be a "devastating effect" on women.
Planned Parenthood has seen $700,000 in funding vanish as the state Department of Community Health uses a new formula to determine where health dollars go. The new equation focuses on the percentage of clients who are below the poverty line rather than how many clients a center sees.
That means Planned Parenthood, which supplements its abortion business by promoting contraception and some legitimate health services, is losing funds because it brings in so many women.
"Some of the poorest, most vulnerable people in our community are at risk," Katherine Humphrey, CEO of the regional abortion business, told the Grand Rapids Press.
Humphrey
told the newspaper that Planned Parenthood would lose 10,000 customers
as a result of the funding cuts because state and federal taxpayer
funding constitutes 40 percent of its budget.
