Harrisburg, PA (LifeNews.com) -- Drivers in Pennsylvania can now purchase Choose Life license plates for their vehicles and express their opinion that adoption is better than abortion. The state is one of 14 that make the specialty plates available to drivers for an extra cost -- with the proceeds funding adoption and abortion alternatives.

Pennsylvania Choose Life sponsored the plates years ago and the administrative process was completed last year to allow them to hit the streets.

Mary Wurtz, administrator for the group, told the Bulletin newspaper how people can obtain one for their automobiles.

"To purchase a Choose Life plate, [a Pennsylvania resident] must first visit our Web site and download an application form or contact us by phone so we can mail a form out to them," she said.

Pennsylvania's system is different from that of most states, where the Choose Life plates are available at local departments of motor vehicles. In the Keystone State, drivers must obtain the plates through the sponsoring organization.

Once PACL submits the forms for the motorist to the state, PennDOT will mail the plates to the driver in four to six weeks. The cost of the plate is $40 but there is not an annual fee to renew it, but the group is asking for $20 a year to continue helping promote abortion alternatives.

Wurtz told the newspaper that 50 percent of the cost goes to her group, which then transfers the money to various crisis pregnancy centers across the state. She indicated she wants the money to stay within the community where drivers purchase the plates.

"I would like to eventually disperse the money in the county where it was collected," she said.

She also called on pregnancy centers to contact her to inquire about receiving grants from the plate proceeds.

"If you are a crisis pregnancy center in need of funding, contact us and we can give you forms to fill out," she told the newspaper.

Russ Amerling of Choose Life Inc., which started the plates in Florida and has helped other states get them, says the 14 states have raised $6,893,246 to promote adoption and abortion alternatives.
