Michigan Planned Parenthood Facility Closes

Houghton, MI (LifeNews.com) -- A Planned Parenthood facility in the extreme northwest portion of Michigan has closed.

Martha Lancaster, director of community services for Planned Parenthood of Northern Michigan, said the facility simply wasn't getting enough clients to make staying open cost-efficient.

The center drew criticism from local pro-life organizations even before its August 2001 opening.

"Yippee yahoo," said Rev. Keith Snyder, director of Copper Country Pro-Life. "I'm really happy about it."

The center faced continual protests from members of the community, and some nearby storeowners are glad it is closing because the protests kept people from patronizing them too.

"This was a battle we could not afford to back down from," Snyder said. "The enemy is who brought the battle here. We could either choose to not do anything -- and just not like it -- or we could fight against it."
