Arkansas House Committee Approves Partial-Birth
Abortion Ban
Little Rock, AR (LifeNews.com) -- The Arkansas House Public Health,
Labor and Welfare Committee on Thursday approved legislation to ban
the partial-birth abortion procedure. House Bill 2536 by Rep. Bill Pritchard,
R-Elkins, would only allow the abortion procedure if necessary to save
the life of the mother, a situation that never occurs. Rep. Stephen
Bright, R-Maumelle, said that the procedure was never needed, that Caesarian
section was always an option and that his wife had required that procedure
last week. Bright was acting as chairman of the committee in the absence
of the regular chairman, according to a Southwest Arkansas Times report.
Rita Sklar, director of the Arkansas chapter of the American Civil Liberties
Union admitted the legislation was crafted in a way that "could
very well pass constitutional muster."
Catholic Church in Spain Launches Stem Cell
Research Initiative
Madrid, Spain (LifeNews.com) -- The Catholic Church in Spain is
launching a new campaign to oppose embryonic stem cell research because
it involves the destruction of human life. The Spanish Socialist government
is currently considering legislation allowing researchers even greater
ability to destroy human embryos. With the slogan "We were all
embryos once," church officials plan to distribute millions of
brochures touting their pro-life position. "Can one experiment
on human beings ... when that experiment brings the death of that human
being? Can we eliminate a human being to benefit another? The church's
position is clear: 'no,'" Secretary General of the Bishops' Conference
Juan Antonio Martinez Camino said.
