Mitt
Romney Leads Potential Republican Presidential Candidates in CPAC
Straw Poll
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Mitt Romney led a group of 10
potential Republican presidential candidates in a straw poll held
at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). The
conference is a gathering of thousands of conservatives and Republicans
and nearly 2,000 people participated in the straw poll, which gives
some indication of the possible candidates to take on pro-abortion
President Barack Obama in 2012. With 20 percent of the vote, Romney,
the former presidential candidate and Massachusetts governor who ran
as a pro-life candidate, finished ahead of pro-life Louisiana Gov.
Bobby Jindal, who received 14 percent. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and
Rep. Ron Paul, a Texas congressman, both of whom are pro-life, finished
with 13 percent apiece. Rounding out the rest of the results: pro-life
former House Speaker Newt Gingrich received 10 percent, pro-life former
Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee received 7 percent, pro-life South Carolina
Gov. Mark Sanford received 4 percent, pro-abortion New York Mayor
Rudy Giuliani received 3 percent, pro-life Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty
received 2 percent and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist received 1 percent.
Nine percent indicated that they are undecided and the rest of the
straw poll participants wrote in someone else's name. The straw poll
was only open to individuals who paid, or had someone else pay for
them, to register for CPAC. Of the estimated 8,000 activists who attended
CPAC, 1,757 conservative activists participated in this year's CPAC
straw poll. Six of the 10 candidates tested for 2012 spoke to CPAC
including Gingrich, Huckabee, Paul, Pawlenty, Romney and Sanford.
The other four, Crist, Giuliani, Jindal, and Palin, did not attend.
Catholics
in Alliance for the Common Good Chair Strong Barack Obama Supporter
Washington, DC (Lifenews.com) -- Catholics in Alliance for the
Common Good was one of a handful of positive-sounding groups that
covered up Barack Obama's pro-abortion position during the presidential
elections. The Catholic Key blog has shed more light on why the group
stood with Obama and pretended he was pro-life. It indicates CACG
chair Elizabeth Frawley Bagley is a significant Democratic Party fundraiser,
was a member of Obama campaign's national finance team, and was a
coordinator of Catholic outreach for the campaign. "In fact,
she has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to the DNC and scores
of pro-abortion Democrat politicians including Al Franken, Barbara
Boxer, Claire McCaskill, Charles Schumer, Hillary Clinton and Barack
Obama. She personally raised at least $350,000 for the Obama campaign,"
the Catholic Key indicates. Bagley is also a former Clinton State
Department official and the Key blog indicates the Catholic News Service
continued to call the group nonpartisan despite the ties. Meanwhile,
CACG's executive director Alexia Kelley responded to the report in
comments to Our Sunday Visitor and claims the group is nonpartisan
because it also has Republicans on its board, including former Vatican
Ambassador Thomas Melady. However, the Key indicates her statement
is not true. "There are 11 voting members of CACG's board and
Ambassador Melady is not one of them, according to their web site.
He is listed as one of 40 people on an advisory council to the group,"
the blog notes. "Six of the 11 voting members of CACG's board
were donors to the Obama campaign. Four have no record of federal
campaign contributions and one gave a small donation to a Democratic
candidate in the past. None are identifiable with the Republican party
or Republican candidates as Kelley told OSV."
Abortion
Advocates Applaud Potential Obama Move to Make Doctors Do Abortions
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- When is pro-choice not really
pro-choice? When abortion advocacy groups applaud a move by President
Barack Obama to consider removing protections in place for medical
staff and centers that don't want to do abortions. As LifeNews.com
reported, Obama has opened up a 3-day comment period in advance of
removing the Bush protections enforcing national conscience laws for
medical professionals. Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL, praised the
Obama administration for moving forward to repeal the pro-life rule.
"President Obama's action today to move forward in repealing
this rule reinforces why elections matter and how new leadership can
end divisive policies that harm women," Keenan claimed. "President
Obama has signaled his intent to honor the public's call for a focus
on commonsense, common-ground solutions that make a difference in
the lives of women and their families. We will continue to work with
President Obama to change the tone of the debate over reproductive
rights." Keenan said nothing about hwy her group favors forcing
doctors and private medical centers to do abortions that conflict
with their moral or religious beliefs. NOW President Kim Gandy also
applauded the Obama administration's move towards forced abortions.
"This is a positive move by the Obama administration, and a demonstration
of the president's commitment to women and reproductive health care,"
she said.
Brazil
Girl Who is Nine Years Old and Pregnant With Twins Will Have Abortion
Brasilia, Brazil (LifeNews.com) -- A nine-year-old girl who became
pregnant with twins after allegedly becoming a victim of sexual abuse
at the hands of her father is reportedly going to have an abortion.
The girl, from Sao Paulo, has not been identified, was found to be
four months pregnant when she was taken to a local hospital after
complaining of stomach pains. Doctors say they are suggesting the
girl have an abortion because they don't think her body can handle
the pregnancy. "We don't know if she will develop the pregnancy
up to the end because of the structure of her body. It is a big risk
for her,'' the doctor who confirmed her pregnancy , Jose Severiano
Cavalcanti, told the Diario de Pernambuco newspaper. "She doesn't
have a pelvis able to support a gestation of twins,." Abortion
is illegal in Brazil, as it is in most of the other predominantly
Catholic countries of South America, except in the rare cases when
a woman is a victim of rape or incest or her life is in danger from
the pregnancy. Brazilian media say the young girl was raped at the
hands of her stepfather, who is 23, and that he has abused the girl
since she was six. He also allegedly abused the girl's physically
handicapped 14-year-old sister. The man was arrested on Thursday as
he attempted to flee to another region in Brazil, and was being kept
in protective custody.
Ohio
Man Will Likely be Charged With Injuring Woman, Killing Her Unborn
Baby
Portsmouth, OH (LifeNews.com) -- A man may be charged with injuring
a pregnant woman and killing her unborn baby under a law pro-life
advocates pushed for in the state legislature. It all started with
a car accident last Friday night in Portsmouth. The crash caused a
miscarriage for one of the passengers, 18-year-old Jennifer King.
King was just four weeks pregnant at the time. Portsmouth Police Officer
John Peters says King along with two other young women, all pregnant,
were cruising in a black Mazda, their friend Ricky Heineman was driving.
Peters says Heineman pulled up to an apartment building and while
still in the car, began some sort of transaction with another supposed
friend. Thats when the police report says the man outside the
car began violently and repeatedly punching Heineman. We thought
Ricky was dead, and his foot hit the gas, and we drove into the tree,
or telephone pole, King said. The police report says after being
punched unconscious, and dragging the puncher along, Heineman's car
plowed into a utility pole where injured and shaken, everyone in the
car ran. The police report says the crash caused Jennifer King to
suffer a spontaneous abortion and police and prosecutors say by law,
the apparent unlawful termination of a pregnancy calls for a homicide
investigation. In Ohio, a crash with the death of an unborn
fetus is looked at as a fatal crash, said Peters. In fact, at
any stage of pre-natal development, if an "unborn member of the
species homo sapiens, who is or was carried in the womb of another"
is killed, it is one of several homicide or assault crimes depending
on the circumstances.
