Pro-Abortion
Group Excited New York Governor Picks Kirsten Gillibrand for Senate
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- One of the wealthiest pro-abortion
groups is delighted that New York Gov. David Patterson has chosen
pro-abortion Rep. Kirsten
Gillibrand to replace Hillary Clinton as a New York senator. Emily's
List is " celebrating the news," according to an email from
its president Ellen Malcolm to LifeNews.com. "In Gillibrand,
New York Governor David Paterson selected a true champion of"
of abortion, Malcolm says. She hoped her group's supporters will "join
me in sending your personal congratulations to our newest pro-choice
Democratic woman senator." Malcolm said her group "stood
with Gillibrand when she chose to challenge an entrenched [pro-life]
incumbent" and she thinks Gillibrand "will be a strong candidate
to hold this important Senate seat for Democrats when she is on the
ballot in 2010." The Emily's List head also noted that Gillibrand
had received an award from the Human Rights Campaign, another pro-abortion
group. During her time in the House, she maintained a 100 percent
pro-abortion voting record and also supported forcing taxpayers to
fund embryonic stem cell research.
Do
Men Have Rights Over Unborn Children? British IVF Lawsuit Asks Question
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- A British woman whose pregnant
daughter was killed in a car crash is considering legal action to
stop her daughter's fiancé using her frozen embryos to have
their child. Kay Stanley had undergone IVF treatment and had her eggs
fertilized before she died. Her mother Gwen Bates claims her fiancé
Brett Vogel may be considering using a female relative as a surrogate
for the fertilized embryo. Bates insists Stanley would have been opposed
to such a move. American bioethicist Wesley J. Smith comments on the
unusual case and insists the father has a right to his unborn child.
"Even if that is true, even if the poor dead woman would not
want her children gestated by another woman, so what? She is dead.
The father is alive. His nascent children can still be born. Why should
he be prevented from having his children--if that is his decision--and
instead be forced to see them destroyed (or possibly experimented
upon)? The law generally holds that a woman is entitled to an abortion--regardless
of what the father might want--because it is her body that gestates
the child. That biological symbiotic relationship fact is seen as
trumping whatever rights the father might have in the matter. It is
her body and if she doesn't want to gestate, she has the unfettered
right, at least in the early months, to terminate the pregnancy. But
in this case, the mother is dead and so her body is not being used
for anything. The father may want to have his children brought to
birth. If the grandmother can legally prevent her grandchildren from
being born, it means that fathers have no rights of any kind over
their pre-born children. If so, that is utter sexism."

Man Indicted on Two Counts of Killing Pregnant Girlfriend, Unborn
Child
Oakland, CA (LifeNews.com) -- Aaron Ashley, 33, was indicted by
a criminal grand jury on two counts of murder in the fatal stabbing
of his pregnant girlfriend. Ashley, who faces life in prison without
the possibility of parole, is accused of killing Latrice Grayson,
24, in her home last year. Police said he used a scissor blade to
stab Grayson, eight months pregnant at the time, to death because
she refused to get an abortion or give up the unborn child for adoption.
A criminal grand jury found late last year that prosecutors had enough
evidence against Ashley to charge him with two counts of murder. Each
murder charge is also enhanced with charges of causing great bodily
injury and using a deadly weapon. The grand jury also found that the
case qualifies as a special circumstances murder, meaning Ashley could
have been eligible for the death penalty. But Deputy District Attorney
Casey Bates said the DA's office will not seek the death penalty.
Bates declined to comment on the case. Ashley, who has a wife and
three children, began dating Grayson 10 years ago when she was 14
and he was 23, authorities said. Grayson became pregnant early last
year, and the two fought over whether she should have an abortion,
authorities said. Grayson refused, and the two agreed she would give
the child up for adoption, but she changed her mind just days before
she was killed.
Ohio
Poll Shows Possible Pro-Life Gov Candidate Rob Portman Leading Fisher
Columbus, OH (LifeNews.com) -- The Dayton Daily News reports that
a new poll indicates that former Republican, pro-life Rep. Rob Portman
Ohio Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher in a hypothetical race for the
seat of pro-life Republican Sen. George Voinovich, who is not running
again in 2010. Portman leads Fisher 41 percent to 39 percent in the
possible matchup. Public Policy Polling of Raleigh, North Carolina
conducted the poll. Many candidates mentioned to replace Voinovich
aren't particularly well known, the poll found. Forty-nine percent
of respondents had no opinion about apparent Republican front-runner
Rob Portman, the former Cincinnati-area U.S. House member. Forty-six
percent were ambivalent about Democrat U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles,
a possible Democrat in the race. Portman led Ryan, 40-34 percent and
was ahead of Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner 42-34 percent. The
poll did not include other possible GOP candidates such as Auditor
Mary Taylor and pro-life former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine.
Missouri
Pro-Life Rep. Roy Blunt May Run to Replace Pro-Life Sen Kit Bond
Jefferson City, MO (LifeNews.com) -- Pro-life Republican Rep.
Roy Blunt is seriously considering a run to replace retiring GOP Sen.
Kit Bond, who is pro-life and will retire in 2010. Blunt said he was
looking at it very seriously. Im making some calls and
people are calling me. Blunt has kept a low profile since Bond
surprised Missourians earlier this month by declaring that he will
retire from the Senate. But Blunt is among Republicans exploring a
Senate candidacy and doing what it takes to get ready. According to
the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Blunt, from Strafford, in southwest Missouri,
noted during a brief interview that hes been successful raising
money nationally, a prime concern for mounting a statewide race. Asked
about Blunt fatigue a potential reticence by voters
to vote in another Blunt after Matt Blunts just-completed term
as governor Roy Blunt defended his son's term as governor.
Minnesota
Sees Pro-Abortion Ex-Senator Dayton Files Papers for Run for Governor
St. Paul, MN (LifeNews.com) -- Former Sen. Mark Dayton, who is
pro-abortion, has filed papers to run for Minnesota governor in 2010.
Dayton joins several other Democrats who have submitted paperwork
for the race. Sen. John Marty of Roseville; Sen. Tom Bakk of Cook;
Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner; Rep. Paul Thissen of Minneapolis,
and frequent candidate Ole Savior are the five who have made it official.
Dayton served one term in the U.S. Senate and did not seek reelection.
Dayton's popularity took a big hit when he decided to temporarily
close his Washington office in 2004, fearing a possible terrorist
strike against the Capitol. Before serving in the Senate, he served
one term as state auditor. Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who was seen
as one of the top possible vice presidential picks for John McCain
in the 2008 presidential election, is strongly pro-life and has strong
support from pro-life advocates in the state.
