More Pro-Life Groups Condemn APA Report Denying Abortion Risks
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
More pro-life groups have condemned the report issued by the American Psychological Association denying any mental health problems in association with an abortion. Allan Parker, president of the Justice Foundation, said more than 100 scientists, medical and mental health professionals, based on their training and experience, signed a statement saying abortion hurts women. They said it is common for women to experience feelings of anger, fear, sadness, anxiety, grief, or guilt after abortion. It is undeniable that significant numbers of women are injured by abortion and should not be ignored by the medical profession and that significant numbers of women suffer serious physical, mental or psychological trauma as a result of abortion, they said. Lisa Dudley, Director of Outreach for Operation Outcry said: "It is time for the world to hear the truth about our pain. Abortion hurts women and we will be silent no more." Meanwhile, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said the APA's conclusion flies in the face of established scientific research to the contrary, it also ignores the high prevalence of women affected by repeat abortion. "The APA recklessly dismisses an established body of scientific research. A number of studies have shown abortion in women to be associated with increased risks of major depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and suicidal behaviors," said Perkins. "The report also ignores a substantial and growing body of evidence consisting of testimonies based on women's real-life experiences, as cited by the Supreme Court in the Gonzales v. Carhart decision last year which upheld the federal ban on partial-birth abortion."

Martin Luther King’s Niece Dislikes Barack Obama Over His Abortion Support
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
Not all black Americans like Barack Obama and one of his biggest critics is Dr. Alveda King, daughter of Martin Luther King’s younger brother. “Senator Obama’s answer to the ills of society, such as continued tax dollars to Planned Parenthood, are diametrically opposed to everything African Americans truly believe and an anathema to the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr,” she told Town Hall. King says Obama does a disservice to the black community and the nation as a while by advocating abortion yet promoting other human rights. “We can talk about poverty; we can talk about the war; we can talk about teen pregnancy; we can talk about incarceration. However, if we’re not allowed to live, we’ll never encounter those issues,” she says. King recalls her Uncle Martin saying, “The Negro cannot win as long as he is willing to sacrifice the lives of his children for comfort and safety.” For Alveda King, abortion is a civil rights issue. “Every aborted baby is like a slave in the womb of his or her mother,” she explains. “The mother decides his or her fate.” “In the shadow of the famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech by my uncle in 1963, as Barack Obama makes his speech in 2008, how can the Dream survive if we murder the children?” asks Dr. King concerning the unborn. "Life was very precious to my uncle and life today is precious.”

Planned Parenthood Claims Medical Journal Supports Its Business Model
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
Planned Parenthood distributed a press release last week that got little media attention, likely because no one could take the news with a straight face. Although Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion business -- doing more than one-quarter of all abortions in the United States annually -- it also engages in legitimate medical practices to make it appear ore moderate. In the press release, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards gives herself a pat on the back for providing the legitimate medical services and points to an article in the American Journal of Public Health as saying women now have more medical choices because of it. She claims the new study “affirms what Planned Parenthood already knew -- public health clinics are providing a broader range of services to more women than ever before.” The study found that Planned Parenthood health centers and other publicly funded providers routinely offer patients a more diverse range of the non-abortion medical services. “This study clearly demonstrates that when we put public dollars into public health programs, women win.” Though the press release is a clear attempt to get more money from the federal and state governments, it makes no mention of abortions or how they helped provide Planned Parenthood with more than $1 billion in revenue during its last fiscal year for the first time.

Pregnant British Teen, Rape Victim, Glad She Didn’t Have Abortion
London, England (LifeNews.com) --
A British teenager who was a victim of rape recently shared her story with the London Daily Mail about how she is glad she didn’t have an abortion and loves her daughter despite her father’s crime. Elizabeth Cameron says she’s not sure what she will tell her daughter when she is old enough to understand the story behind her birth. “When new people ask, I say I have nothing to do with him - which is true,” she says. “But I'm not sure yet what I will tell Phoebe herself when she is old enough to ask. Hopefully, one day, I will get married, and then Phoebe will have a father and it won't be such an issue.” That Phoebe exists at all almost defies belief. Practically everyone who knew exactly how Elizabeth had fallen pregnant - doctors, siblings, even her own father - urged her to have an abortion as soon as possible. The only person who pleaded with her to at least consider having the child was her mother, Sarah. “Everyone, save for mum, thought I should have an abortion,” she says. “My dad even made an appointment at the clinic, and they showed me the little blob on the scan, I presume, to convince me that it was just a mass of cells and the whole thing would be over quickly. But I couldn't go through with it. At school, my friends - most of whom didn't even know about the rape - couldn't understand why anyone my age would want to have a baby rather than an abortion.” Yet Elizabeth grew to love her daughter. “It was surprisingly easy to love her as she grew inside me, but I have to admit I was scared my feelings would change when I saw her.”

Orlando, Florida Man Bikes 700 Miles to Raise Funds for Pregnancy Center
Orlando, FL(LifeNews.com) --
Boyd Johnson doesn't have any children. Yet after spending 30 years as a physical education teacher, he now focuses his time on convincing pregnant women to have their children. "I wanted to try and let people know that there are other options besides abortion," Johnson said. Johnson serves on the board for True Life Choice in Orlando, Florida, a Christian crisis pregnancy center. To celebrate his age and raise money for TLC, he will embark on a bicycle ride next week. Johnson will attempt to ride 700 miles in 10 days on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, starting Tuesday, August 12. The average of 70 miles per day would equal his age. TLC is associated with Care Net, which has crisis pregnancy centers across the country. "We help them before the baby comes. We help them after the baby comes," Johnson said. He indicated he’s excited about the bike ride. "I love to ride in the mountains," he said. "We don't have many hills in Orlando." As a college physical education teacher, Johnson has always stayed active. At age 44, he competed in the Ironman in Hawaii. It took him more than 16 hours to complete the 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile marathon. For his 40th high school reunion, Johnson rode his bicycle from Orlando to Huntington, West Virginia. The 867-mile trip took 10 days to complete. For his latest physical challenge, he sent out an e-mail to his friends asking for donations. He encourages anyone to donate either 1-2 cents per mile, totaling $7-$14.

Chattanooga Pro-Life Teenagers Raise $4K In Car Wash to Stop Abortion Center
Chattanooga, TN (LifeNews.com) --
Teenagers in the Tennessee city of Chattanooga didn’t take news of a possible new abortion business arriving in town lying down. They wanted to raise thousands of dollars to stop the new abortion business and help women find alternatives and they put together $4,000 at a recent car wash. At their weekly meeting on Thursday, 17-year-old Hannah Wysong announced that Teens Against Abortion had raised $4156.20 in their pro-life car wash on Tuesday. The goal was $20,000 in one day, but several individuals and churches have yet to send in their donations. "We are very encouraged that several churches are going to take up special offerings at their Sunday morning services,” Jordon McAfee, acting director of Teens Against Abortion, told the Chattanoogan newspaper. "A number of individuals gave donations of $500 or $1,000. I believe that before the month is out that all $20,000 will come in." said Hunter Morgan, one of the teens who called individuals for donations. "God has blessed us with enough money to mail to every doctor and nurse within a 50-mile radius of Chattanooga. The letter will ask them to refer girls who are having problems after abortion to the www.AbortionProblems.net web site." The city that local pro-life advocates say is the largest in the United States without an operating abortion center appears likely to get one. Stuart Schneider, who operates abortion facilities in Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina and Augusta, Georgia, may be opening one here.
