Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The level of support for a health care bill has plummeted to below 40 percent for the first time in a new Rasmussen poll. The numbers showing health care support at its lowest levels all year come after the Senate on Saturday approved a bill that contains massive abortion funding and other pro-life concerns.

Just 38% of voters now favor the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats, the Rasmussen survey indicates.

With 56 percent now opposing the pro-abortion plan, that is the lowest level of support measured for the plan in nearly two dozen tracking polls Rasmussen has conducted since June.

Half the survey was conducted before the Senate voted late Saturday to begin debate on its version of the legislation. Support for the plan was slightly lower in the half of the survey conducted after the Senate vote, the polling firm indicates.

"Intensity remains stronger among those who oppose the push to change the nation’s health care system: 21% Strongly Favor the plan while 43% are Strongly Opposed," Rasmussen noted.

As has been the case for months, Democrats favor the plan while Republicans and voters not affiliated with either major party are opposed. The latest numbers show support from 73% of those in the president’s party. The plan is opposed by 83% of Republicans and 70% of unaffiliated voters.

Self-described moderates have fled as well, opposing the pro-abortion health care plan by a 55-39 percent margin.

Majorities of both men (61%) and women (52%) among likely voters now oppose the health care restructuring bill and every age demographic except 18-29 year olds oppose it by majorities ranging from 58% to 65%. Among the nation’s senior citizens, 34% favor the health care plan and 60% are opposed.

The new Rasmussen poll follows two polls last week confirming that a majority of Americans oppose including taxpayer funded abortions in the health care bill.

A new CNN poll found 61 percent oppose government funding abortions with public dollars.

The poll found six in ten Americans favor a ban on using federal funds for abortions, such as the Stupak amendment recently added to the health care bill in the House.

The CNN poll goes further and finds that a majority of Americans, by a 51 to 45 percent margin, believe women should be required to use their own money to pay for abortions even if they have private health insurance and no government money is involved. They did not think health insurance should pay for abortions.

Also, a new Pew Research Center poll found a 55% majority of Americans say that abortion should not be included as a guaranteed medical benefit if the government health care reform plan passes. Only 28 percent say it should be included while 11 percent said it "depends" and 6 percent did not know.

More than seven-in-ten (72%) of those who oppose the legislation say coverage of abortion should not be included in government benefits. But, even among Americans who favor health care reform, a 46% plurality says abortion should not be included in government benefits, while 35% say it should.
