Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Pro-life members of the Senate may be in the minority and may see their numbers decrease following the presidential election, but that doesn't mean they will give up on efforts to press the cause. Senator David Vitter says he will continue working to revoke taxpayer funding from the nation's largest abortion business.

Vitter was responsible for an amendment to the fiscal year 2008 Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill that would have revoked the family planning funds sent to Planned Parenthood.

The Senate voted 52-41 against the amendment Vitter, a pro-life Louisiana Republican, offered, but he promises to keep up the fight.

"I will continue to fight for these and other measures to bring about an end to abortion in this country," Vitter said in a recent email to a constituent that LifeNews.com obtained.

Vitter's comments came in response to the latest news that a Planned Parenthood affiliate in Indiana that issued Christmas gift cards that it said could be used for abortions.

"These gift certificates are highly offensive and especially disrespectful to those who recognize the important religious and faithful significance of the Christmas season," he said. "These repugnant gift certificates are, unfortunately, just the latest Planned Parenthood attack on values."

"That’s why I offered an amendment last Congress to the Health and Human Services funding bill to prohibit the distribution of taxpayer dollars to abortion providers, like Planned Parenthood," Vitter continued.

Vitter says it is "outlandish" that current federal regulations do not make Planned Parenthood separate the federal funds it receives for family planning from its abortion business money.

"This ambiguity has allowed organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, to receive large sums of federal funding for 'reproductive health activity' programs and often channel these federal dollars to clinics that perform abortions to pay for overhead expenses like electricity bills and office support staff -– freeing up other funds for abortions,"

"The federal government should not use taxpayer dollars to pay for acts that so many Americans find morally wrong. And my amendment would have closed a loophole for taxpayer funded abortions," Vitter said.

As Vitter concludes, "unfortunately," the Senate defeated his amendment.
