Catholic Group Says Barack Obama Record Proves He Won't Reduce Abortions

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading pro-life Catholic group has released an urgent member to Catholic voters who sincerely want to reduce abortions. The Fidelis Center for Law & Policy says Barack Obama's record and stance on the issues proves he will not reduce abortions if elected president.

The memo outlines a series of statements and facts taken from Obama’s public record dealing with the issues of life.

“The protection of innocent human life" is "of fundamental concern," Brian Burch, the head of Fidelis, which is behind the popular web site CatholicVote.com, told LifeNews.com.

"Catholics deserve to know exactly where each of the candidates stand on these issues," he explained. "We encourage every Catholic to distribute our memo throughout their dioceses and particularly to their local pastor or priest.”

The memo points out Obama's position that he supports unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason. It highlighted his much-criticized votes in the Illinois legislature against measures to provide adequate medical care for newborns who survive failed abortions.

The Fidelis memo noted Obama voted against a partial-birth abortion ban in the Illinois legislature, voted no in Congress on parental notification and consent laws, and voted no in the Senate on providing poor pregnant women and their unborn children with more medical care and support.

The memo cites the endorsement of Obama by key pro-abortion groups like NARAL and Planned Parenthood and notes that one of Obama's first actions as president would be to take down the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits forcing taxpayers to fund abortions in other nations.

The memo released today has been distributed directly to priests, pastors and its national network of members.

This Sunday thousands of Catholic parishes across the country are expected to address the importance of voting, and the moral responsibilities of Catholics to defend and protect human life. The memo is intended to assist Catholic priests and the laity as they preach on and discuss the issues involved in the coming election.

Burch told LifeNews.com that he's excited about the success of the group's CatholicVote.com web site and the inspiring film it contains.

“As a result of the success of our film, we have been registering thousands of new members every day willing to assist in voter education and outreach. We are mobilizing these members to distribute today’s memo,” he said.
