Washington,
DC (LifeNews.com) -- The American Nurses Association is coming
under fire form a leading pro-life nurse for creating a web site supporting
Barack Obama. The national nursing group is accused of selling out
the interests of women and unborn children by supporting a thoroughly
pro-abortion candidate.
In an email to its membership yesterday, the group said it is "excited to announce the launch of our web site 'Nurses for Obama.'"
"This web site is dedicated to providing nurses with the tools necessary to educate others about ANAs endorsement and the importance of electing the Obama-Biden ticket, as well as updating nurses on the latest Obama-Biden campaign news," the group says.
The ANA touts its apparel with pro-Obama slogans, a video from Obama praising the group for its endorsement, and information comparing the health care plans of Obama and McCain.
As a member of the national nursing group, Mary-Kate Heffern tells LifeNews.com she's dismayed it has endorsed Obama.
"I feel disenfranchised by ANA after having been a member for more than three decades," Heffern said.
Heffern's concerns are more than political, as she is a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Prolife Nurses. She can't believe the ANA is willing to support a candidate who supports abortion throughout pregnancy for any reason.
"It is obvious that, among other things, our professional organization has eliminated the unborn as legitimately entitled to this standard of care, beginning with the most basic, life itself," she told LifeNews.com.
Heffern said the ANA's decision to endorse Obama and promote his candidacy shows the group has put politics ahead of the profession.
"This answers a question ANA continually asks" about why so few nurses belong to the national organization.
Heffern also said the nurses association is not addressing the concerns of pro-life nurses -- ranging from "the freedom of Catholic hospitals to choose not to perform abortions" to "end of life issues which are also part of the controversy pitting the rights of health care providers and systems versus the power of the government."
