Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a Hollywood culture that promotes sex and views teenagers and young adults who don't subscribe to the notion of promiscuity as Neanderthals, anyone who dares stand up against the culture shows some real courage. That's what Jordin Sparks did last night at the MTV Video Music Awards.

VMA host Russel Brand started the exchange with a comment about the promise rings worn by members of the Jonas Brothers, a pop-rock band popular with teenagers.

Not content to let Brand have the last word on the brothers' commitment to abstinence, pro-life pop-R&B singer Jordin Sparks, a previous American Idol winner, shot back.

“I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut," she said.

The comment cause a controversy in the "sex sells" music marketplace and Sparks followed up on her comments in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"It’s something I feel strongly about,” she said. “I wish I would've worded it differently — that somebody who doesn't wear a promise ring isn't necessarily a slut — but I can’t take it back now. It was a split-second thing, and it came out kind of wrong. Still, I don’t regret it.”

The Jonas brothers apparently didn't mind it either, who complimented Sparks moments after her remarks.

Sparks said she and Brand made up after the show and that she would be a host again if MTV invited her back next year.

The singer got her start in the pro-life movement and first showcased her singing talents there.

As LifeNews.com profiled last year, Sparks has repeatedly participated in pro-life conferences as a volunteer and singer.

She sang at Arizona's Right to Life 2005 conference and attended the conference with Dr. Alveda King, the pro-life niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the keynote speaker at the event.

Sparks hasn't been shy about her pro-life beliefs either.

She appears on Fox & Friends last year with Brian Kilmeade who asked her questions based on emails from viewers. Sparks was asked about a ring she wears on her wedding ring finger even though she is 17 year-old and unmarried.

She said, without hesitation, that it was her Purity Ring, and that it says she's waiting until she is married, and saving herself for true love.

As she won the American Idol contest, the Internet was full of talk about a photo that appeared on Sparks' personal Myspace page with her holding a sign from National Right to Life saying Stop Abortion Now.

In fact, those gigs at pro-life rallies are credited with getting a buzz about her and catching the eye of well-known Christian singer Michael W. Smith, with whom she performed.

Her singing in contemporary Christian circles won her enough praise that she won the Gospel Music Association Spotlight Award in 2004.
