Washington,
DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new ABC News poll finds presidential candidate
John McCain would lose as much as 20 percent of his support should
he select a pro-abortion running mate. With such a decision adding
him the backing of just 10 percent of voters, McCain would suffer
a net loss of 10 percent.
The
poll underscores the importance for pro-life voters and most Republicans
of picking a pro-life running mate such as Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, told LifeNews.com
that the results show "a clear sign that the senator's longtime
pro-life stance is a winning one."
Of current McCain supporters, 20 percent in the ABC News/Washington Post poll say they'd be less likely to vote for him if he picked a candidate for vice president who favors abortion. Just 10 percent would be more likely.
Breaking down the numbers further, 27 percent of conservatives say they would be less likely to support McCain and just 3 percent more likely. Among evangelical voters, the split is larger -- with 29 percent saying they would be less likely to support McCain and just six percent more likely.
Among pro-life voters who oppose all or most abortions, there is a 32 percent net drop-off for McCain with a pro-abortion nominee.
Surveying all voters, McCain would ultimately lose the support of 10 percent of Americans by choosing someone who didn't share his pro-life views on abortion.
Even among independent voters who say they may be tempted to change their vote from Obama to McCain, there is a net loss of 16 percent for picking a pro-abortion running mate.
While pro-life voters would abandon McCain in droves, just 6 percent of pro-abortion voters would be more likely to support McCain with a pro-abortion running mate and only 18 percent of those who are the most strongest pro-abortion voters would consider changing their vote.
The
poll also found 19 percent of voters would be less likely to vote
for McCain with Joe Lieberman as his running mate and just 12 percent
more likely. Former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge would cost McCain
6 percent.
