Washington,
DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new Gallup poll finds pro-life Democrats
are abandoning Barack Obama now that more evidence has been presented
that Obama takes a hardcore pro-abortion position. The drop in his
support from pro-life Democrats also comes as John McCain has
been more active promoting his pro-life views.
As the election draws closer and more voters are paying attention to it and learning where the candidates states, a Gallup poll finds pro-life Democrats are less inclined to support Obama.
The Gallup survey shows Democrats who say they are conservative on issues like abortion supported Obama at a 72 percentage point clip in mid-July.
Now, that level of support has fallen to just 63 percent -- dropping steadily since then during a time Obama has come under fire nationally for his opposition to a bill to provide medical care for newborns who survive abortion.
Obama has lost 5 percentage points with pro-life Democrats in the last few days alone as McCain has bashed him for opposing the anti-infanticide bill and Obama hurt his own case further by picking pro-abortion Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate.
Polls have shown Obama struggling to maintain his Democratic base compared with McCain's ability to attract Republicans and Gallup said his standing with pro-life Democrats is the reason why.
"According to weekly averages of Gallup Poll Daily tracking, the problem seems to be with conservative Democrats," Gallup said in a statement LifeNews.com obtained Wednesday.
'Within the Democratic Party, Obama's losses are primarily evident among the relatively small group that describes its political views as conservative," it explained. "The 63% of conservative Democrats supporting Obama over McCain in Aug. 18-24 polling is the lowest Obama has earned since he clinched the Democratic nomination in June."
As more Republicans learn about the presidential abortion divide, they are also heading to McCain and abandoning Obama.
Gallup said Obama had the backing of 11 percent of Republicans in July but that has fallen to seven percent now.
The
slide among pro-life Democrats coincides with Gallup's survey of all
voters showing John McCain picking up support.
