Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Two new polls released on Friday show Senator John McCain and pro-abortion candidate Barack Obama tied nationally. They also show very close races in several leading battleground states that will play the most vital role in determining the winner of the electoral college.

On the national level, a new Gallup poll shows each candidate with the support of 44 percent of voters. Twelve percent of the registered voters surveyed are still undecided or are backing a third party candidate.

That's a downturn for Obama, who reached a six point lead just days ago after Gallup showed the race tied at 44 percent at the end of July.

A Rasmussen Reports survey shows Obama with a 47-45 percent lead among voters, which is within the margin of error. The poll found 55 percent of voters view Obama favorably while 54 percent say the same of McCain.

Meanwhile, new state polls show McCain with a modest edge in North Carolina, Obama slightly ahead in Minnesota and a toss-up in Colorado, Virginia, and Nevada.

McCain leads by six points (50-44%) in North Carolina, trails Obama by four in Minnesota (49-45) and leads Obama by three in Nevada (48-45) and one percent each in Colorado (49-48) and Virginia (48-47.

Other recent polling data shows the candidates tied in Virginia, with an Insider Advantage poll showing a 43-43 percent tie.

Survey USA has recent polls in Washington, where Obama leads by seven points, and in North Carolina, where McCain leads by four percent, and in Virginia, where McCain leads by on point.

Looking at other polls this week: Franklin and Marshall University shows Obama leading 46 to 41 percent in Pennsylvania, Insider Advantage has McCain leading 48 to 44 percent in Florida, Strategic Vision has Obama ahead 47 to 42 percent in Wisconsin, and Quinnipiac has Obama leading by 10 percent in New Jersey.

Obama currently has a 49 to 44 percent lead in Iowa, a 52 to 42 percent lead in Oregon and a 49 to 45 percent lead in Michigan while McCain has a 55 to 37 percent lead in Kentucky, a 50 to 44 percent lead in Missouri, and a 47 to 34 percent lead in Alabama.
