Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll shows Americans now trust John McCain more to handle abortion issues than Barack Obama. Obama had been slightly in the lead in the national daily presidential tracking survey the polling firm Rasmussen Reports conducts but that has changed.

As more Americans learn about John McCain's pro-life position on abortion and Barack Obama's support for unlimited abortions financed with taxpayer dollars, Americans appear to be moving in McCain's direction.

Prior polls found Obama leading on the abortion question and an August poll had McCain leading 39 to 36 percent, a three point difference.

Now, McCain holds a lead of six percent, with 40 percent of Americans saying they trust him more to handle the issue and only 34 percent saying Obama. Another 26 percent aren't sure and that number appears likely to go down as more people realize the stark abortion contrast that exists in this election.

The poll results come on the heels of new national surveys showing McCain faring much better and even taking a lead among likely voters.

The Rasmussen Reports daily poll released on Monday shows the race for the White House is tied with Barack Obama and John McCain each attracting 44% of the vote. However, when "leaners" are included, it's McCain 47% and Obama 46%.

That's the first time McCain has led among leaners since Obama became the presumptive nominee and it follows a new Gallup poll that shows McCain leading with voters most likely to go to the polls in November.

Meanwhile, the recent Zogby International poll finds McCain leading 42 percent to 41 percent over Obama, which represents a sudden turnaround from the Reuters/Zogby poll in early July that showed Obama ahead 46 to 36 percent.

McCain made big gains among some of Obama's strongest demographic groups – young adults, women and independents. McCain gained 20 percent while Obama lost 16 percent among voters ages 18-29.

McCain closed 10 points on Obama among women, although Obama still leads by a 43 percent to 38 percent. Obama and McCain are tied among independents after Obama held an 11-point lead.

Even Democrats have cooled on Obama, dropping from 83 percent support to 74 in the Zogby survey.
