Washington,
DC (LifeNews.com) -- After the Barack Obama campaign appeared
to have dissolved its internal group to build support among Catholics,
a new voter-driven group has been created to support the pro-abortion
candidate. The organization, 10,000 Catholics for Obama, hopes to
build a grassroots efforts to lure Catholics.
As LifeNews.com reported last month, following significant national criticism it appeared the Obama campaign dissolved the first Catholic outreach effort.
Catholic League President Bill Donahue had called on Obama to disestablish his National Advisory Council because of evidence showing the majority of the members of the council had received 100 percent voting marks from extreme pro-abortion group NARAL.
Now, the 10,000 Catholics group has been created and, according to a CBN news report, it is operating independent of the Obama campaign although it has consulted with campaign staff.
Peter James Kralovec, one of the creators of the group's web site, talked with CBN News correspondent David Brody about the organization. He said the Catholics who are backing Obama want the abortion issue de-emphasized even though the Catholic Church has said no political issue is more important.
"We take the abortion issue very seriously but at the same time abortion has been used as a wedge issue to divide voters," he said.
"We have seen some resistance in some circles but we want to express some facts about the senator's record on abortion and change the dialogue on this issue," Kralovec added.
But Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life says the policy for Catholic voters, set forward by the nation's bishops, can't be more clear that abortion is the overriding issue in the elections.
He points to the Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship document the bishops produced saying, The direct and intentional destruction of innocent human life from the moment of conception until natural death is always wrong and is not just one issue among many. It must always be opposed."
Pavone also directed Catholic voters to the statement of Pope John Paul II in the Gospel of Life which states that when a state makes abortion legal, the disintegration of the State itself has already begun."
That sounds like more than just a single issue to me, Pavone said, and our organization doesn't intend to sit on the sidelines and watch it happen.
