Father of Teen Who Died From Abortion Drug Worried About Australia Vote

Livermore, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The father of a California teenager who died after getting the abortion drug RU 486 from a local Planned Parenthood is worried about a vote in Australia to legalize the dangerous pills there. They have killed three other California women, another in the U.S. and injured more than 850 more.

Monty Patterson found out his daughter Holly took the abortion drug only after she began complaining of problems from it.

He has called on the Food and Drug Administration to pull the drug from the market pending a safety review and is now calling on members of the Australian parliament not to vote in favor of a measure that would lead to selling the drugs there.

The Australia Senate already voted in favor of the measure and the House is expected to follow suit next week. But if it approves the bill, Patterson doesn't see it as changing his efforts to stop its use to protect women.

"I don't think it's losing ground," he told the Contra Costa Times newspaper.

Patterson said some members of the Australia parliament invited him there to discuss Holly's death, but he declined because the invitations were extended to him from pro-life groups.

"I wanted to go to carry the message about the health, safety and welfare of all women," he said. "I didn't want to feel I was there to represent any special interest."

Patterson also wrote letters to the Australian Medical Association, encouraging the group to renounce its position in favor of the abortion drug. The group's position has already prompted some doctors to resign from it.

Of the California women who died form the abortion drug, all of the deaths appear to have involved infections brought on by the mifepristone pills misuse of the abortion pills by Planned Parenthood.

Oriane Shevin, a 34 year-old woman from Sherman Oaks, in southern California, was the latest to die from using the abortion pills. She passed away June 14 after she took the Mifeprex abortion drug and the misoprostol pill to have an abortion.

Shevin, an attorney and mother of two children, was taken by ambulance to Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center and doctors said she died from sepsis, a blood infection that was also responsible for the September 2003 death of Holly Patterson.
