Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Last week, the Bush administration used a national law prohibiting American taxpayer funding of international groups that promote forced abortions to de-fund UK-based Marie Stopes International. The decision points to how the policy could change if Barack Obama becomes president.

As LifeNews.com reported, Assistant Administrator for Global Health Dr. Kent Hill banned funding of MSI on the grounds that it is complicit in "coercive abortion and involuntary sterilizations" in China.

MSI denies that it supports China's coercive policies, but both the Bush administration and pro-life groups who have monitored the abortion business say its longstanding collaboration with China's coercive program leave little doubt that it is not only aware of the massive human rights abuses that have resulted in that country, but is actively collaborating with it.

The Bush administration has also withheld millions of taxpayer dollars from the UNFPA for the same reason -- after the State Department conducted an investigation and found the UN agency lent support to China's one-child policy that involves forced abortions and sterilizations.

What would happen to this policy against funding forced abortion-friendly groups should Obama occupy the White House?

Obama was not present for a Senate vote this summer on whether the policy preventing funding of the UNFPA and abortion businesses in China should be weakened.

Before that, in April 2005, Obama supported an amendment to nullify the Mexico City Policy, which prevents forcing taxpayers to fund performing or promoting abortions in other nations.

Catholic writer Deal Hudson wrote an editorial over the weekend that acknowledges Obama will likely overturn the policies and fund international pro-abortion groups.

"Millions of dollars, taxpayer dollars, have been taken away from Planned Parenthood and the United Nations Population Fund," Hudson explained. "If Obama is elected, all this money, and more, will be restored."

"Kemp-Kasten will go by the wayside, along with the Hyde Amendment, and the Mexico City Policy," Hudson added, referring to the three main policies that prevent taxpayer funding of abortions domestically and abroad.

"The argument about abortion reduction during an Obama presidency would be risible if it were not so tragic," Hudson concluded.

Obama's votes stand in stark contrast to those of Senator John McCain, who has repeatedly voted against funding abortions with tax money.
