Beijing, China (LifeNews.com) -- Mao Hengfeng has been beaten, jailed, lost her job and subjected to the kind of human rights abuses frequently found in China's one-child population control program. Now, she is a victim again as she continues speaking out against injustice in the Asian country.

Mao has been fighting for 15 years for the nation to abolish its one-child policy, which prohibits couples from having a second baby. The policy has resulted in forced abortions and sterilizations, imprisonment, revocation of jobs, fines, and harassment and assault of family members.

For her actions, Mao was forcibly imprisoned in a labor-concentration camp for two years and was beaten and tortured while she was there.

Now, the pro-abortion human rights group Amnesty International indicates Mao was recently detained and reportedly beaten after protesting about forced evictions in Shanghai. The Shanghai Public Security Bureau yesterday sentenced Mao, 48, to seven days administrative detention.

The group indicates Mao and her daughter were taken by police from outside the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress meeting on Monday.

As the police surrounded the building where the meeting took place, Mao reportedly shouted, "Shanghai representatives, you should serve your people. Come listen to us! We want democracy and freedom, and an end to torture!"

Mao's family told the human rights group that, following a visit with her, they learned she had not been fed and had bruises and sores showing she had obviously been beaten.

Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific director, said, "Mao Hengfeng is being arbitrarily detained for exercising her right to protest peacefully. She should be immediately and unconditionally released."

In 1989, Mao was forced to have an abortion and dismissed from her job at a Shanghai soap factory, when she became pregnant for the third time. She has been protesting through official channels ever since, and, in April 2004, was sent to 18 months "re-education through labor" because of her persistence in petitioning the authorities.
