Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Pro-life groups universally applauded President Bush and his veto of a bill that would require the American public to spend their hard earned dollars promoting a type of scientific research that has never helped a single person. They agreed with the president that embryonic stem cell research is unethical.

“The test of presidential courage and leadership comes in the waning days of the administration,” Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in response to the veto.

“President Bush was forceful in his defense of the tiniest human beings at the beginning of his administration, he is equally forceful now," she explained.

"Such moral clarity is even more valuable now that we face a Congress that is willing to make the utilitarian sacrifice of human embryos for the completely unproven cause of embryonic stem cell cures," Dannenfelser added.

Concerned Women for America representatives agreed saying that signing the bill would have forced taxpayers to fund experiments that kill embryos and delay real hope and real cures for suffering people.

"American taxpayers should not be forced to fund unethical research, just as we should not be forced to fund abortion," Wendy Wright, the group's president, told LifeNews.com.

"Ethical stem cell research is creating nearly-miraculous results for patients and producing stem cells with embryonic qualities without destroying embryos," Wright said. "Science is catching up to ethics, proving that human beings should not be destroyed for science or to benefit another."

Douglas Johnson, the legislative director of National Right to Life, said the stem cell research debate shows the disingenuousness of supporters.

"Since not a single human being has benefited from any procedure using embryonic stem cells ... the congressional Democratic leadership is more interested in demagoguery than in supporting the most promising types of stem cell research, which do not require killing human embryos," he said.
