Denver, CO (LifeNews.com) -- The Colorado state House has approved a resolution that would have the state legislature urging Congress to spend federal taxpayer dollars on embryonic stem cell research. The resolution comes at a time when U.S. senators who back the unethical research are asking for a vote on a bill to do just that.

The state House voted 44-21 in favor of the resolution, which now heads to the state Senate.

The measure asks Congress to overturn the limits on federal funding President Bush put in place in August 2001.

The president has allowed hundreds of millions of dollars annually to be spent on adult stem cell research, which has already yielded dozens of treatments for patients, while embryonic stem cell research still hasn't proven successful in animals.

The U.S. House approved a measure to topple Bush's limits last May but the Senate has yet to vote on the measure.

Rep. Angie Paccione, a Democrat from Ft. Collins sponsored the Colorado measure and debated Rep. Kevin Lundberg, a Republican who said embryonic stem cell research is wrong because it involves the destruction of human life.

“Is it ethical in the first place to take a live human being and experiment with it?" Lundberg said, according to a report in the Grand Junction newspaper.

“Shall we the people pay for it?” he said. “When some of we the people ... do consider this to be experimenting with human bodies, then ... we shouldn't go down that road.”
