A New York City teenager allegedly left her dead baby’s body in an airplane bathroom Monday night after a botched abortion, police said Wednesday.
The New York Post reports cleaning staff found the baby’s body in a toilet while they were cleaning early Tuesday on an American Airlines flight at LaGuardia Airport. The plane had traveled from North Carolina to Queens late Monday.
Police said they questioned flight staff, and later found the 18-year-old East Flatbush woman who allegedly left the baby’s body in the toilet.
“She pulled the baby out and put it in the toilet and covered it with paper,” a law enforcement source told the New York Daily News. The source said talking to the young woman was “like talking to a stone wall.”
Police said she had been traveling home from vacation in Jamaica when she began experiencing pain.

After her fellow fliers deplaned at LaGuardia, the woman rushed to use the plane’s bathroom, with her twin sister telling crew that it was an “emergency,” sources said.
A flight attendant later told police that the teen looked ill when she emerged from the bathroom, according to sources.
A cleaning crew was scrubbing the Airbus A321’s bathroom early Tuesday when they made the horrifying find: a fetus, apparently three to six months along, lying in the toilet, an American Airlines spokesman said.

The teen, meanwhile, around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday checked into Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, where doctors determined she may have suffered a botched abortion.
Later, police said the unnamed teen told them she did not know she was pregnant.
In an interview with the news outlet, the teen’s grandmother said she was still “shaking” from the news, and she believes her granddaughter “panicked.”
Authorities said an autopsy is being conducted on the baby to determine whether he/she was born alive. They have not filed any charges against the teen, and the investigation continues.
What exactly happened remains a mystery for now. Whether abortion or infant abandonment, it is a deeply troubling situation where a baby is dead and a young woman is facing questioning and public scrutiny for possibly choosing to end her unborn baby’s life.
