Catholic schools are being criticized just for being Catholic.

In Ontario, Canada right now, one Catholic school is facing heaps of criticism for prohibiting students from fundraising for groups that support abortion and euthanasia.

Canadian Press reports the Halton Catholic District School Board recently suspended its “Sanctity of Life” fundraising policy after parents and province Minister of Education Indira Naidoo-Harris complained.

The “Sanctity of Life” policy follows Catholic Church teachings about the sanctity of human life by encouraging students to support organizations that align with its religious values. The policy prohibits students from fundraising for groups that support abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research and other issues contrary to church teachings.

Here’s more from the report:

The board, which is responsible for schools in Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville, introduced the policy in February.

The initial resolution called for an end to all fundraising efforts benefiting organizations that “publicly support … abortion, contraception, sterilization, euthanasia or embryonic stem cell research.”

The policy was implemented immediately, but has now been placed on hold until at least the 2018-19 school year.

The Star reports a group of parents, teachers and students held several school walkouts to protest the policy. Many complained the policy is too broad because it includes organizations that indirectly support anti-life issues, such as several cancer organizations.

While those opposing the policy have been the loudest, some parents and community members have praised the school board for their adherence to Catholic teachings, according to the report.

Earlier this year, school trustee Helena Karabela told the news outlet why the policy is so important.

“With this motion to ban donations to charities that support abortion, we are making sure the Catholic schools are walking the talk,” Karabela said in a statement. “The church teaches that abortion is the killing of an unborn human being.”

What truly is outrageous are those protesting a Catholic school for being Catholic. The church’s strong stance against the killing of human lives is well known across the world. To demand that a Catholic school stop promoting its own faith values is absurd.
