Horrifying and bizarre, a German woman recently was convicted of killing two newborn babies by stuffing them in plastic bags and throwing them in her freezer.

The Mirror reports Steffi S., a 46-year-old woman from Benndorf, Germany, admitted to killing both her son and daughter in 2004 and 2008. Judge Jan Stengel recently sentenced her to 9 ½ years in prison on a manslaughter conviction, according to the report.

Steffi S. said she and her partner, Uwe W., 55, already had four children, and she did not think he wanted any more when she became pregnant with her son and daughter. According to court records, she concealed both pregnancies from her family.

According to the coroner’s report, the babies both were “fully viable” at birth.

Here’s more from the report:

In early January, cops discovered the bodies of two dead babies in her freezer in the town of Benndorf.

State prosecutor Hendrik Weber said: “After an unwanted and secretive pregnancy, she killed two newborns in 2004 and 2008.”

During the trial, a coroner testified that the babies had been killed by packing them in a plastic bag and putting them in a freezer where they slowly suffocated.

Steffi S. also admitted to killing both newborns during the trial.

“I am a monster, I cannot look at myself in the mirror anymore. I always hoped that the bodies would only be found when I would no longer live,” she said.

She told the judge she did not regularly use birth control and “it was already too late for an abortion.” Abortions are legal up to 12 weeks in Germany.

After she and her partner recently broke up, police said they received a tip from Uwe W. about the babies’ bodies in Steffi S.’s freezer, according to the report. This prompted an investigation of Steffi S. as well as Uwe W., who apparently knew about the babies’ bodies despite his ex-partners’ attempts to hide both pregnancies.

Prosecutor Klaus Wiechmann said they still are investigating Uwe W. in relation to the crimes, and refused to comment further.

While some abortion activists hold up such horrific situations as examples of why abortion should be legal and easily accessible, they fail to recognize that an abortion also destroys a baby’s life in a brutal, barbaric way. Whether inside the womb or out, a baby is a living, unique human being who has value and deserves protection.
