Families of children with disabilities from throughout Pennsylvania will be gathering in March for a rally designed to stop the abortion of children with Down syndrome.
The rally, which will be held March 12th in the Capitol Rotunda, is designed to draw attention to House Bill 2050, a common sense measure that would ban any abortion where the sole reason for the abortion is a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome.
World-renowned disability rights activist Karen Gaffney will headline the rally. Gaffney, a young woman with Down syndrome, gained international fame for swimming the English Channel. She has also won high praise for her speeches and academic achievements.
Teenager Chloe Kondrich will also be appearing at the event. Kondrich, who has Down syndrome, has become a goodwill ambassador for people with Down syndrome, meeting with public officials, celebrities, and others to attest to the contributions that those with an extra chromosome make in their communities.
Kondrich recently appeared at a White House Rose Garden ceremony commemorating the tragic U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade.
That court ruling, which legalized abortion nationwide, essentially declared open season on children with disabilities. Research indicates that the vast majority of preborn babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted in the United States.
Pennsylvania took the first step in trying to bring down the abortion rate among Down syndrome babies by passing Chloe’s Law. Named for Chloe Kondrich, the law provides information about resources and support when parents receive a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome.
But now, people throughout Pennsylvania believe it’s time to take a stronger stance toward the abortion of babies with Down syndrome. That is why the passage of House Bill 2050 is so important.

The bill already has the support of more than 70 co-sponsors in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. A similar bill will be considered by the Pennsylvania Senate.
It has been said that those who reach out to people with Down syndrome are entertaining angels. Next month’s rally will be a testament to that.
