Abortion Clinic Offers to Do Late-Term Abortion on Healthy 28-Week-Old Baby

Pro-life advocates exposed another late-term abortionist this week for being willing to abort a healthy, viable unborn baby up to 28 weeks of pregnancy.

The most recent investigation by Priests for Life and Abortion Free New Mexico focused on LeRoy Carhart, one of the last late-term abortionists in the country. Several women have died along with their unborn babies soon after leaving his Maryland abortion practice, and dozens more have left in ambulances.

The new undercover call exposes Carhart’s willingness to abort unborn babies who are both viable outside the womb and healthy.

Posing as a woman seeking an abortion, the caller explains that she is 26 weeks pregnant and considering an abortion. She explains that both she and her unborn baby are healthy, but she is not sure she wants to have the child.

“Do you have any major medical problems at all?” the clinic asks. “Is there anything wrong with you or your pregnancy?”

The caller says no to both questions.

“At 26 weeks it’s $7,000…” the clinic continues. “We can see you up until 28 weeks; if there’s no medical reason after 28 weeks, it’s a case-by-case basis.”

When the woman asks about her unborn baby’s development and ability to survive outside the womb, the clinic tells her that her baby would not survive – despite strong evidence to the contrary.

“I mean, it’s going to be developed but not a viable pregnancy if it was outside of your body at that point in your pregnancy,” the clinic tells her.

“So, it wouldn’t, like, be able to survive outside?” the woman asks.

“Well, not when you’re 26 weeks, no technically, … you’re 24 weeks pregnant really from conception so chances of viability would be very slim,” the clinic says.

Yet, a growing body of research indicates very premature babies can survive and thrive after just 24 weeks in the womb. In October, the journal Pediatrics highlighted a baby girl in the United States who survived after being born 21 weeks and four days after conception. The girl, who now is 3, is believed to be the youngest premature baby to survive.

Research published in 2015 in the New England Journal of Medicine also found that 23 percent of premature infants are surviving birth as early as 22 weeks.

After misleading the woman, the Maryland clinic then tells her that it does not offer any type of counseling for women who are not sure if they want an abortion. And if she wants more questions answered about the abortion procedure itself, she will have to pay.

“This latest undercover call reveals that Abortionist Leroy Carhart in Bethesda, MD is performing late term abortions on healthy women carrying healthy babies through 28 weeks of pregnancy,” Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico stated. “He is not, however, inclined to offer in office consultations for his patients who have questions before the 3-4 day abortion procedure.”

In May, her group also exposed how easy it is to schedule a late-term abortion in New Mexico. In that case, the Albuquerque abortion facility was willing to abort a healthy, viable unborn baby at 30 weeks.

The videos reinforce what abortionist themselves have said. Several late-term abortion practitioners have admitted that women do have late-term abortions for “purely elective” reasons.

“The abortion industry is not concerned with giving women information and choices; these profiteers are merely killers for hire who don’t want to answer any questions, they just want to get paid,” Shaver said.

“In the light of these facts, we are urging all U.S. Senators to vote for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (S. 1622), to protect these children starting at 20 weeks of their development,” said Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life.
