Pro-Abortion Fallacy of the Day: “Why Don’t You Pro-Lifers Adopt These Unwanted Children?”

A few years ago, a principal from my local elementary school decided with her husband to expand her family by adopting a little girl with Down syndrome.

The couple was so overjoyed by the experience that they decided to adopt a second child with Down syndrome, a happy surprise to even those who were familiar with the first adoption.

The National Down Syndrome Adoption Network offers additional success stories on its website.

Consider the words of the parents of a child named Janae:

“We have learned a lot about Down syndrome and watched Janae accomplish milestones. Yes they were achieved later than her peers, but we are so happy to see her growth. Our lives have been so enriched by her adoption into our family. Yes we have our challenges too but what family doesn’t. We don’t know what the future holds for Janae, but we will be right there every step of the way. Rejoicing with her for everything she is able to accomplish!”

Or consider the family who adopted Faith Noelle:

“We were contacted about a little girl, yet to be born, who had Down syndrome and a heart condition that would need to be repaired a few months after she was born. That was the beginning of our journey with Faith, She is our best Yes!”

Faith weighed only 2 pounds, 12 ounces when she was born on a New Year’s Eve. She spent a month in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. But her story has a happy ending:

“Faith is now a year and half and she is growing and thriving. She is the light of our lives. Her three older brothers adore her and would do anything for her. She is so loved by all who know her. Not a day goes by that I don’t look into her sweet face and feel SO thankful that her first family chose to give her life, and chose us to be the ones to watch her live it. She is a gift, and such a blessing.”

These are just a few of the accounts documenting the successful placement of children with Down syndrome. The reports defy the myth that there are no families willing to adopt children with special needs. Those families are actually all around us.

Whether formed by natural biological ties or adoptive apron strings, families with children with Down syndrome are incredibly blessed. Those who advise aborting such children are impoverishing families, and our nation as a whole, robbing us of some truly amazing gifts.
