This Republican Congressman is Telling the Truth About Planned Parenthood

A pro-abortion website has released a false story about a pro-life congressman who is telling the truth about Planned Parenthood.

To hear it from the blog refinery29, Congressman Tim Walberg of Michigan supposedly foisted a big whopper on his constituents when he said that most of what the Planned Parenthood abortion business does has abortions. However it turns out that that’s true and the pro-abortion website is peddling one of the biggest propaganda pieces for Planned Parenthood.

The abortion advocacy blog claims that only 3% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion. But that false claim has been refuted many times including by The Washington Post, which is no Bastion of pro-life opinion. It turns out refiner29 is lying, as the Washington Post concluded that Planned Parenthood is “misleading,” “using meaningless and incomplete comparisons to make their argument, and the public should wary . . . .”

But here is the pro-abortion fiction:

Many conservative lawmakers want nothing more than to see Planned Parenthood completely defunded and out of operation. This was made clear by Senate Republicans’ recent healthcare proposals that would have withheld federal funds from Planned Parenthood for a year and President Trump telling the organization in March it could keep its funding if it stopped performing abortions. And it was reiterated again on Tuesday when Rep. Tim Walberg flat-out lied to his constituents about the services the healthcare provider offers.
At a town hall in his home state, the Michigan Republican said the “majority of work” Planned Parenthood does is abortions.

“The bottom line is,” he said, “there is no reason we pay for an abortion entity to carry on their main function, and that being abortion.”
Many people in the crowd started shouting as he spoke, shaking their heads “no.” One woman stood up and yelled as she stormed out, “This is not true. This is a lie that he’s saying about Planned Parenthood.”
And she was right — abortions make up just 3% of the services Planned Parenthood provides, according to its latest annual report. Any way you slice it, 3% never constitutes a “majority of work,” as Walberg claimed.

As LifeNews has explained many times, Planned Parenthood unbundles all of its services except abortion to create a lopsided and deceptive view of its services.

The fact is that a majority of Planned Parenthood’s clinic income comes from abortions. As attorney Matthew Clark has noted:

The Washington Post Fact Checker continues noting, as I have in the past, that looking at Planned Parenthood’s abortion revenue could paint a far better picture of Planned Parenthood’s true business model:

Typically, this calculation is made by taking the number of abortions, multiplying them by the average cost of abortions advertised by Planned Parenthood clinics, and dividing the figure by the organization’s total non-government health services revenue [clinic income].

The main Planned Parenthood Web site says first-trimester abortions can cost up to $1,500. Some affiliate clinic Web sites provide a range of costs: a Western Pennsylvania clinic lists $390 to $1,090 for abortions, and first trimester abortion is priced at $515 in Arizona.

It explains that while “advocates and opponents of abortion rights have calculated somewhere between 15 percent [of total revenue] and 37 percent [of clinic revenue]” comes from abortion, “[d]epending on which price you use, you can even get up to 55 percent.”

That’s 55% of Planned Parenthood’s clinic income coming from abortion.  I’ve previously calculated this at 51% of its clinic income.  It’s clearly grown in recent years.

So, at 51% or 55% Congressman Walberg is right. A majority of Planned Parenthood’s business is abortion.
