Police arrested a Nigerian man recently after he allegedly shot a woman with whom he was having an affair.

The accused, Ogbonnaya Igwe, allegedly paid for the woman to abort their unborn baby and then shot her to death when she kept asking him for money, according to the Daily Post.

Abia State Police in Nigeria report Igwe denied shooting Ijeoma Chibuzor but admitted to trying to “scare her away” with a double barrel shot gun.

Igwe told Police Commissioner Leye Oyebade that he and Chibuzor were having an affair, but she was making his life miserable.

“Initially I gave her the sum of N15,000 (fifteen thousand naira), to terminate the pregnancy, but she came back later to demand another N1million(one million naira) saying that there were complications during the process of abortion resulting in excessive bleeding,” Igwe told police.

“I had to sell my house in Aba to raise the money, but this woman kept coming for more money. I cannot explain what happened, I tried to scare her away with the double barrel gun, I did not shoot her,” he continued.

However, police said when they responded to reports of the shooting, Igwe tried to evaded arrest and they eventually had to drag him to the police station.

They said they also found a double barrel shot gun that had recently shot four cartridges.

Stories of domestic violence and abortions frequently are tied together.

In March, a Hawaii jury convicted a man of murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend after prosecutors said he stabbed her to death for refusing to abort their unborn child. It does not appear that there were any charges in connection to the unborn child’s death in the case.

And last year, a Brooklyn, New York man was sentenced to to up to 32 years in prison after a court found him guilty of attacking his pregnant girlfriend and killing their unborn child. In that case, the girlfriend, Mia Jones, also had refused her boyfriend’s demands to abort their unborn child.

In a separate New York case, another man was convicted of attempted murder in November 2015 after he allegedly secretly gave his pregnant girlfriend an abortion drug that caused the death of their 13-week unborn child, LifeNews reported. His girlfriend said she refused to abort their unborn baby, even though he was constantly pressuring her.

Last June, LifeNews reported another gruesome case involving a North Carolina woman who allegedly was murdered by her boyfriend after refusing to abort their child.

As LifeNews previously reported, one study found that as many as 64 percent of post-abortive women say they felt pressure to have an abortion. Whether there was pressure involved in the Nigerian case is difficult to say. All that is clear is that a woman’s and unborn child’s lives were destroyed in violence.
