A gruesome double murder took place in Brazil recently when a woman allegedly lured a pregnant woman to her home, drugged and killed her and then cut the baby out of the dead woman’s womb, according to authorities.

The Metro reports Naiara Silva Costa, 22, and her baby both died in the attack, allegedly at the hands of another woman, Suelen Coimbra do Carmo, 27, who was pretending to be pregnant.

Authorities said Carmo allegedly lured Costa to her home in Goiânia, Brazil with an offer of baby clothes and accessories. There, Carmo allegedly drugged Costa and then cut her baby girl from her womb, according to the report. There is no indication of how old the unborn baby was, but information from reports suggests the baby may have been viable.

Here’s more from the report:

Detective Azuen Magda Albarello said: ‘Naiara died in a terrifying and helpless way probably knowing her child was going to be taken from her. She was doped with a powerful dose of Rivotril, a lethal drug that incapacitates the victim.

‘Once the medication took hold the accused confessed she tied a rope around the victim’s neck and hung her until she was sure Naiara was dead.

‘Carmo told us, at that time, the baby was still alive and moving in the woman’s womb.

‘She took a scalpel and slashed open the pregnant belly. But she was shocked to find the baby was in a bad way because the umbilical cord was wrapped twice around the child’s neck.’

Carmo told police the baby girl’s umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck twice. It appears that Carmo may have wanted to claim the baby as her own; she told police that she tried to resuscitate the baby girl before she died.

Neighbors told authorities that Carmo claimed she was pregnant. One neighbor, Marcos Pereira, said Carmo asked him for advice about gardening and pouring a cement wall around the garden, and he thought it was strange that she was doing those things while pregnant.

Later, when Pereira became suspicious of Carmo’s activities, he called the police, according to the report.

Carmo is charged with two counts of murder.

The situation is eerily similar to another horrific case in Colorado in 2015. In that case, Dynel Catrece Lane attacked Michelle Wilkins and cut her 7-month unborn baby girl out of her womb. A Boulder, Colorado jury convicted Lane of attempted murder for attacking Wilkins.

In 2015, Lane lured Wilkins to her home after posting an ad on Craigslist about baby clothes, LifeNews previously reported. After talking with Wilkins, Lane beat and stabbed her before cutting her unborn baby girl from her abdomen. Left alone in the basement of the home, Wilkins eventually was able to call police. She was in critical condition for days. Her baby daughter died.

Lane was not convicted in the death of Wilkins’ unborn baby girl, Aurora. Though the unborn baby was seven months along and likely would have survived outside of the womb, prosecutors were not able to bring charges for her death because Colorado state law does not regard unborn children as human beings who deserve justice when they are killed.
