The United Nations put even more pressure on Ireland to legalize abortion this month.
A report from a UN committee on women’s rights repeatedly criticized the pro-life country and called for the repeal of its Eighth Amendment, The Nationalist reports.
The Eighth Amendment protects unborn babies’ right to life and prohibits abortions except when the mother’s life is in jeopardy. Pro-lifers estimate that the constitutional amendment has saved approximately 100,000 unborn babies’ lives from abortion in Ireland.
This month, however, the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women criticized the amendment, claiming it impedes women’s human rights by “unduly restrict[ing] access to abortion.”
Ireland has been facing global pressure from the United Nations and pro-abortion groups, backed by some of the world’s richest men, to legalize abortion on demand by repealing the Eighth Amendment.

As expected, prochoice NGOs based in Ireland are seizing on the opportunity to push their case for the removal of the Eighth Amendment, despite the fact that there is no right to abortion in international human rights law. There is a right to life, set out in Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the “right to life, liberty and security of person”, but this does not deter those who want to see the rights of unborn children stripped out of the Irish Constitution where they are protected by the Eighth Amendment.

Groups like the National Women’s Council of Ireland and the Abortion Rights Campaign are making the case for abortion before the CEDAW Committee, all the while ignoring a very basic fact – abortion is the ultimate discrimination. Targeting the rights of unborn children is an attack on the most vulnerable members of Irish society.
Unborn babies who are diagnosed with any kind of disability are particularly at risk as we know that in countries like England and Wales, where abortion is freely available, 90% of babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome in the womb are aborted. That figure rises to 100% in Iceland and it is purely discriminatory.
The United Nations has pressured Ireland and other pro-life countries to legalize abortion on numerous occasions. Last spring in Geneva, Switzerland, 14 countries represented at the UN demanded to know why Ireland has not legalized abortion. Ireland has resisted the pressure and continues to protect unborn babies and their moms from abortion.
In 2012, the Irish government responded to the constant pro-abortion pressure with a report demonstrating how its pro-life laws are protecting women and babies. Ireland has one of the lowest maternal mortality rates and highest maternal health safety rates in the world, according to the report.
Ireland is not the only country being targeted by abortion activists through the UN. Last year, the UN began increasing the pressure on South American countries to legalize abortion as they deal with the spread of the Zika virus. Some believe the virus may be linked to birth defects.
