A Senate committee today signed off on the nomination of pro-life Governor Nikki Haley as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. During her confirmation hearing, the Trump UN Ambassador nominee told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that she will oppose abortion on an international level, saying she is “strongly pro-life.”
UPDATE: The U.S. Senate voted 96-4 to confirm Haley’s nomination.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday easily approved Nikki Haley’s nomination with Democrats putting up little opposition. Haley was approved on a voice vote but two pro-abortion Democratic senators, Chris Coons of Delaware and Tom Udall of New Mexico, objected to her nomination.
Her nomination will likely be voted upon by the full Senate next week.
The United Nations appointment is important as pro-abortion nations are pushing the United Nations to make abortion a so-called human right. Previously, the Obama administration had joined those other nations to push abortion on an international level. As UN Ambassador, Governor Haley could help stop that effort and work to ensure that unborn children are respected in that International body.
The South Carolina Republican governor said she would bring her pro-life views to the United Nations.
“I am strongly pro-life, so anything we can do to keep from having abortions, or to keep them from not knowing what is available, I will support,” she said.
Abortion activists have been trying to sway the UN Human Rights Committee for decades. Last fall, Stefano Gennarini told LifeNews that the committee published a draft opinion on the “right to life” in international law that assigns mothers the right to abort their children.
But global support to protect the right to life of the unborn child and his or her mother from the violence of abortion is growing. Countries are increasingly defending their religious and cultural values, as well as their sovereign laws during negotiations at the United Nations despite mounting pressure. Radical NGOs are increasingly frustrated.

Still, the UN has tried to punish pro-life nations.
As LifeNews reported, the United Nations Human Rights Committee punished the pro-life nation of Peru in December, forcing it to pay reparations to a woman who was not allowed to abort her unborn baby. The UN committee declared abortion a “human right” in the woman’s case and said the country was wrong to deny her an abortion.
Haley has a long record of supporting pro-life legislation and signing it as governor of the state of South Carolina.
“I believe every life has a value and is blessed by God–my husband was adopted and my pro-life convictions stem from the fact I feel the blessings of that value every day knowing someone chose life for him. I see it every day in my two children as I watch them grow. My hope is that we continue to encourage and work towards educating that value of life to everyone, ” Haley has said.
Haley’s pro-life record has earned her the support of pro-life groups in her state.
After Haley ordered an investigation of abortion clinics in the state following a national scandal involving Planned Parenthood selling aborted babies and their body parts, state health officials found multiple violations. Haley said the investigation she ordered had found violations of laws or regulations by all three abortion clinics in the state, including one operated by Planned Parenthood. Two of the abortion clinics may be forcibly closed unless they take fast action to get in compliance with the law. According to state officials, the violations include improper infectious waste disposal practices.
Planned Parenthood’s Columbia clinic and the Greenville Women’s Clinic, received suspension orders from the Department of Health and Environmental Control. The orders cite multiple violations found during recent inspections.
“The entire country was shocked by the videos showing Planned Parenthood employees’ horrifying disregard for human life,” Haley said in a written statement. “That prompted me to ask our appropriate state agency to investigate whether such wrongdoing was taking place in our state. The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has now completed its investigation and has concluded that all three abortion clinics in the state are in fact in violation of South Carolina laws or regulations.”
“I fully support DHEC’s actions, including its referral of the matter to SLED,” said Gov. Haley. “South Carolina is a compassionate state, and we are a state of laws. We will not tolerate law breaking of any kind, particularly as it relates to the callous treatment of human life.”
In 2012, Haley signed two key pro-life bills and she was joined in doing so by pro-life advocates who were elated by her leadership in protecting unborn children and stopping abortions in South Carolina.
In a formal bill signing ceremony at the Carolina Pregnancy Center in Spartanburg, Haley signed the Opt Out of Abortion Act and the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act, both strongly backed by South Carolina Citizens for Life and numerous pro-family organizations.
The Born-Alive Infant Protection Act would protect unborn children who are born alive after a failed abortion but may be purposefully left to die afterwards. The legislation defines an infant born alive as a person even if the baby survives an abortion attempt and makes it so babies who are born alive under any circumstances cannot be treated as medical waste, or deliberately killed because they are unwanted.
Haley said the pro-life issue “isn’t partisan” and she added that it should not be a political issue.
LIFEPAC endorsed Governor Haley in the 2010 General Election. Her SCCL pro-life survey was 100 percent and her voting record in the House of Representatives was solidly pro-life.
Haley previously slammed the media for making it appear women are only interested in contraception.
Haley leveled the criticism after Meet the Press host David Gregory grilled her on the “gender gap” in Republican support being an obstacle to Mitt Romney defeating President Obama in November. Haley took Gregory to task for the question: “I find it comical that the news media wants to continue to talk about a gender gap, and so I’ll challenge you to ask a man about the gender gap as well.”
