West Virginia Abortion Clinic Closes, Now There’s Just One Abortion Center Left

West Virginia has just one abortion clinic left this week after another area abortionist appears to have retired, closed shop and moved out of state.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports Kanawha Surgicenter, an abortion facility in Charleston, closed permanently on Jan. 17. The facility announced the news with a handwritten sign posted on the door. The news outlet also observed people outside the facility throwing away trash and medical supplies.

Here’s more from the report:

A woman who answered Dr. Gorli Harish’s phone and said she is his wife said the family moved to California two years ago to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The doctor had been commuting to Charleston once a month to perform procedures and no longer wished to make the regular trips, she said.

With Kanawha Surgicenter’s closure, the only other abortion provider in the state is the Women’s Health Center, on Charleston’s West Side.

Local abortion activists claimed the closure was a tragedy. Margaret Chapman Pomponio, executive director of WV Free, told the news station women already face too many “serious obstacles” to getting “abortion care.”

The past two months have brought news of several more Planned Parenthood facilities closing, including two in Massachusetts and three more in Pennsylvania. A Kentucky abortion facility also plans to close permanently on Jan. 27 after the state caught it masquerading as a doctor’s office and performing abortions without a license.

Abortion clinics in the United States are closing at a record pace as demand for their deadly business declines and abortionists retire, with few people willing to fill their jobs, a 2016 Bloomberg analysis found.

Between 2011 and 2015, at least 162 abortion clinics closed or stopped doing abortions; 21 new abortion clinics opened in that same time period, according to the analysis. A report from Operation Rescue also showed 53 abortion clinics closed in 2015 alone.

The lack of business has been a major factor in the closing of abortion clinics, the Bloomberg report suggested. Abortion rates are dropping to historic lows across America as more women choose life for their unborn babies. In 2014, abortions dropped below 1 million for the first time since 1975, the Guttmacher Institute reported last week.

The Bloomberg analysis also suggested that some abortion clinics closed because fewer doctors are willing to be abortionists. Several facilities closed between 2011 and 2015 because they could not find a doctor willing to do abortions after their current one retired or was deemed “unfit” to practice, according to the report.
