Virginia House lawmakers voted this week to set aside Jan. 22 to mourn the millions of unborn babies lost to abortion in the past 44 years.
On Jan. 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision on Roe v. Wade and opened the doors to legalized abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy. Since then, an estimate 59 million unborn babies have been killed in legal abortions across the U.S.
The Virginia House lawmakers are calling Jan. 22 a “Day of Tears,” CNS News reports. The delegates passed a resolution on Wednesday to encourage Virginians to “lower their flags to half-staff to mourn the innocents who have lost their lives to abortion.”
“By making a visual step in support of life, hopefully we can help save lives,” said state Del. Ben Cline, a Republican who introduced the resolution, the Roanoke Times reports. “And ultimately, this is what that’s all about.”
The resolution passed in a 57-36 vote, according to CNS News. However, abortion activists blasted the resolution, claiming it was an attempt to “shame women,” according to the report.

Pro-lifers will attend hundreds of events across the United States this week to speak up for the rights of unborn babies and call for an end to Roe v. Wade. The national March for Life, scheduled for Jan. 27 in Washington, D.C., typically draws hundreds of thousands of people to the streets around the U.S. Capitol to peacefully protest Roe and mourn the millions of babies lost to abortion.
