Black Americans Comprise 13% of the Population, But 35% of Abortions Kill Black Babies

According to the Centers for Disease Control’s most recent Abortion Surveillance Report, Black Americans make up 13.3% of the population, but now comprise 35% of reported abortions. To combat the high rate of abortion in the African American community, Human Coalition and the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) denomination have collaborated to launch a new website aimed at engaging Christians in an effort to end abortion in the Black community.

Family Life Campaign is the new Church of God in Christ website that is dedicated to introducing COGIC’s 6.5 million followers to the initiative. The site was created by COGIC’s strategic partner, Human Coalition, and features powerful video stories, life-affirming resources, and access to Human Coalition’s prayer app.

The site contains several uplifting videos of courageous women. These videos can be shown in a church setting or easily shared through social media to convey the beauty of life. The women featured in the videos all courageously chose life for their children amidst difficult economic and relational circumstances.

The website also features relevant articles and blog posts educating the church abortion’s devastating impact on America, on what must be done to turn the tide. Together, Human Coalition and COGIC have executed a strategic, 3-year initiative encompassing several key objectives. First, both organizations will work cooperatively on plans to end abortion city-by-city. Second, Human Coalition will provide training, resources, and education to enhance COGIC’s pro-life work. Third, COGIC members will utilize Human Coalition’s prayer app to intercede for hurting women in cities across America.

Bishop Vincent Matthews is the COGIC leader of the Family Life Campaign. Bishop Matthews said the initiative is about “going home, rolling up your sleeves, and taking care of a child.”  Bishop Mathews puts the harm done by abortion in perspective, comparing it to the Civil Rights violations of the last century. “Some 3,446 African-Americans were lynched in the U.S. between 1882 and 1986,” he said. “We lose more African-Americans to abortion in this country every three days. Our church does not believe in abortion – we have to do something about it.”

The website was launched at COGIC’s Holy convocation last month, which drew more than 30,000 attendees. We move forward with renewed faith in God’s power to heal America’s woundedness from abortion. We also continue to work tirelessly to bring local church communities to deeper awareness and conviction about abortion in our nation and how integral they are to ending the holocaust.

The Church of God in Christ is the oldest Pentecostal denominations in the World and the 4th largest Protestant group in the United States with churches in over 82 countries worldwide and a membership of nearly 6.5 million adherents. Human Coalition is one of the largest pro-life organizations in the country, committed to ending abortion in America by rescuing children and serving families in key, abortion-riddled communities nationwide.
