Laura and Nathan Phillips’ wedding day was a joyous occasion for more reasons than one. When the British couple exchanged their vows, their 2-year-old son, who was never expected to live, stood right beside them.

The Phillips family has a unique story. The Express reports Laura and Nathan, who both have forms of dwarfism, met several years ago while acting in a pantomime production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Laura, whose maiden name is Whitfield, is known for appearing in the Harry Potter films.

The two described beginning a “fairy-tale” romance after meeting on the show. But, as often happens in fairy tales and real life, bad news struck the couple. After Laura became pregnant, doctors informed her and Nathan that their unborn son had inherited each of his parents’ forms of dwarfism, anachondaplasia from his mother and pseudochondaplasia from his father, according to the report.

Doctors told them something that no parents ever want to hear – their unborn son probably would not live long outside of the womb. They asked Laura to consider having an abortion, but she refused. Laura and Nathan wanted to give their son the chance he deserved.

Now, their son Nathan Jr. is 2 ½ years old, and his parents call him their miracle baby. Doctors said Nathan Jr. is doing well. He served as the ring bearer at their wedding recently in County Durham, England.

“He decided he didn’t want to carry it anymore and he threw it to the side,” Laura said. “It was quite funny and it was really special for us to have him there – he just loves to steal the show.”

The couple became engaged before Nathan Jr. was born, but they decided to postpone the wedding until after their son was born and old enough to walk down the aisle with them.

“I know that people doubt us because we are little, but we are just like everyone else – the only thing that is different is our height,” Laura said. “The wedding was a great plateau to show everyone how confident we both are within ourselves – and we had the best day of our lives.”
