430 Groups Want United Nations to Create a Special Day to Promote Abortions

To pro-lifers, the idea of a “Safe Abortion Day” celebration may seem like a sickly ironic joke, but the idea is exactly what hundreds of pro-abortion groups are trying to push the United Nations to adopt.

CNS News reports a coalition of 430 international pro-abortion groups sent a letter to the UN asking that Sept. 28 to be recognized as “Safe Abortion Day” by the UN General Assembly. The International Campaign for Women’s Right to Safe Abortion launched the initiative with help from NARAL, Planned Parenthood and hundreds of other pro-abortion groups and individuals, according to the report.

In the letter, the pro-abortion coalition explained that it chose Sept. 28 because the date “was declared an international day of action for the decriminalization of abortion in 1990 by the women’s health movement and has been celebrated annually ever since.” Past celebrations of the abortion day have included “marches” and “flashmobs,” “street theatre” and “art exhibitions,” music, films, demonstrations and more, according to the letter.

The pro-abortion groups asked the UN “to send a strong signal to the international community and to all our governments with a simple but highly symbolic statement of support for safe abortion” by agreeing to acknowledge the pro-abortion celebration.

The letter claimed that abortion is “one of the safest medical procedures,” and blamed pro-life countries for making it unsafe for women to get them. The problem is that there is no such thing as a safe abortion. The very purpose of an abortion is to kill a human life in the womb. In many cases, abortions are not safe for women either.

An overwhelming majority of studies have linked abortion to an increased risk of breast cancer. Infertility, miscarriages and preterm births with subsequent pregnancies also are known risks of abortion. Myriad mental health problems, including anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies, also have been linked to abortion.

Strong evidence also disproves abortion activists’ claims that abortion is safer than childbirth. Several studies have refuted such claims, and maternal mortality rates are lower in countries like Ireland and Chile where abortions are illegal.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 424 American women died from abortion complications between 1973 and 2012; however, the CDC says its data is incomplete. The numbers likely are much higher. According to the report, its numbers “during 1998-2011 cannot be used alone to calculate national case-fatality rates … because certain states did not report abortion data every year during this period.” A number of states still do not report their abortion data to the CDC, making it impossible to know how many women have died from abortions in the U.S.

Even if an abortion was perfectly safe for a mother, abortion by its very nature is unsafe for the unborn child. The purpose of an abortion is to kill, to destroy an unborn human life. It is never safe and definitely never worth celebrating.
