Abortions among black women are disproportionately high in the U.S. and have been for many years. New research from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute indicates that this has not changed in the past six years.
For many years, pro-lifers have been pointing out various ways the abortion industry targets racial minorities. One study found that 79 percent of Planned Parenthood’s surgical abortion facilities are within walking distance of black and Hispanic neighborhoods. And Planned Parenthood itself was founded by Margaret Sanger, who many argue was a racist and eugenicist who wanted to rid the world of “defective” and “feeble-minded” minorities.
The new data serves as more evidence that abortion clinics continue to target minorities for abortions. Guttmacher recently studied women who had abortions between 2008 to 2014 and found that black women were substantially over-represented. White women had 39 percent of abortions, black women had 28 percent, Hispanic women had 25 percent, Asian/Pacific Islander women had 6 percent and women of other backgrounds had 3 percent, according to the report.
The number of abortions among black and Hispanic women are disproportionately high considering that blacks make up 12 percent and Hispanics 16 percent of the population, compared to whites at 64 percent, according to U.S. Census data.
“The racial and ethnic composition of patients was quite similar in 2008,” according to Guttmacher. “White women were slightly underrepresented among abortion patients in 2014, having an abortion index of 0.7, while black women were substantially overrepresented, with a relative abortion rate of 1.9. Hispanic women were slightly overrepresented among abortion patients in 2014 (1.2).* The abortion index for Hispanics declined slightly, from 1.5 in 2008, and there was little change in the indices for blacks and whites.”
Past data has shown similar results. According to the National Vital Statistics Report from June 2012, African American women experience an average of 1.6 times more pregnancies than white women, but have 5 times more abortions over their lifetime. Hispanic/Latina women experience an average of 1.5 times more pregnancies than white women, and have 2.3 times as many abortions over their lifetime.

Rev. Arnold Culbreath, Director of Protecting Black Life and a founding member of the National Black Pro-Life Coalition, previously told LifeNews that abortion is the leading cause of death among African Americans and higher than all other causes combined.
“Minority communities are the #1 targets of Planned Parenthood,” Culbreath said. “Getting this information to as many people as possible is not only critical, it’s a matter of life and death for countless babies and oft times even their mothers.”
These statistics have led to a strong call for the abortion industry to stop targeting African Americans and other minority groups lives. The #BlackLivesMatter movement started to draw attention to police violence involving African Americans, but pro-lifers in the African American community also have been using the hashtag to call for an end to the violence of abortion against black babies.
