Feminist Groups Protest Proposal in Poland to Ban All Abortions: “Cancer is Live Tissue Too”

The political atmosphere is heating up in Poland as leaders consider a ban that would protect all unborn babies from abortion.

On Saturday, thousands of abortion supporters gathered outside of the Polish Parliament in Warsaw to protest the measure during an event organized by 60 feminist and human rights groups, Ukraine Today reports.

The citizen-lead bill would make abortion illegal in Poland except to save the mother’s life. Currently, abortion is legal in cases of rape, life or health of the mother or severe fetal deformities. The measure has support from the Catholic Church and the Polish Federation of Pro-Life Movements, as well as the Polish prime minister and other key political leaders, LifeNews reported.

On Saturday, many of the pro-abortion protesters showed up with their children, according to the report.

One protester, Patricia Banasik, brought a clothes hanger to the protest. She said the bill would take Poland “back to the Medieval Times.” Protesters also hung coat hangers on a tree to symbolize the illegal, self-induced abortions that they say could occur if the measure passes, according to the report.

Anna Jakobic, another protester, told the news outlet that she personally would not have an abortion but she believes women should be allowed to have that option.

“It’s a hard decision to give birth to a child conceived after rape or a baby with disabilities,” Jakobic said. “No government can decide this. Maybe they also want to prohibit oncological operations? Cancer is also live tissue.”

Cancer, however, is not a living human being with its own unique DNA. The news outlet failed to point out Jakobic’s failed analogy.

The citizen-lead bill is gaining attention after the horrific story of a late-term baby who allegedly was born alive after a failed abortion attempt at a Warsaw hospital and screamed for an hour as it was left to die.

Last week, Poland Prime Minister Beata Szydlo told Radio Poland that she supports the citizen bill, which needs 100,000 signatures before it can be considered by the legislature.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the ruling Law and Justice Party in Poland, said he also plans to follow the Catholic leaders’ call to pass the measure. According to Reuters, Kaczynski said he will not force his party to vote on the measure, but he is “convinced that a vast majority of the caucus, or perhaps all of it, will back the proposal.”

Mariusz Dzierżawski, of the Pro-Life Foundation, also spoke to the news outlet about the measure: “It is not a human right to kill the weak and children with genetic defects. The abortion is not a therapy for a pregnant woman, whose life is under threat. The easiest way is to conduct a caesarean section, and then both woman and the baby will be saved. People who encourage legal abortions are killers and liars. They are worse than the Nazis and Bolsheviks.”

Abortion is legal through the first trimester in most of Europe. Poland is one of the few European nations that protects unborn babies from abortion in most cases.
