Figures from the Canadian province of Quebec show 216 babies were born alive following botched abortions during the period from 2000-2012 and left to die afterwards. The numbers have pro-life advocates up in arms.

Thew news outlet OneNewsNow has more on the new figures:

The post-abortive deaths of the 216 abortion survivors are considered to have a “non-negligible” upward impact on the eastern Canadian province’s infant mortality rate, say the authors of the study. The researchers complain that Quebec must alter the way hospitals record such deaths and insist that the abortion-surviving babies must me more closely monitored to see how they are cared for during the few hours of life they experience outside the womb in hospitals.

Campagne Québec-Vie President Georges Buscemi argues that the researchers conducting the study represent the true spirit of the age, pointing out that they appear to be more concerned that the 216 intentional deaths of babies have the negative effect of inflating Quebec’s infant mortality rate — rather than showing any concern for the pain and discomfort the born-alive babies felt as they were left to die in hospitals.

According to the Quebec study, there was an 8.6-percent rise in the province’s overall infant mortality rate between 2000 and 2012 during the first day after birth, when compared to the rate between 1986 and 1999. Titled “Abortion and Infant Mortality on the First Day of Life,” the study’s statistics show that the overall rise in infant deaths is the result of a 20-fold increase in babies dying after surviving botched abortions.

The reason for the hike in infant deaths given by the authors of the study is blamed on the development of amniocentesis and ultrasound imaging used to detect fetal abnormalities. The report also indicates that when the induction — or poisoning — method is administered for late-term abortions, it causes a “significant” abortion failure rate … by their terminology, which actually means that more babies are surviving. Surviving babies were noted in the report as “nonviable and receive only palliative care.”

From 2000 to 2012, 19.4 babies died after surviving live abortions for every 100,000 live births in Quebec. Between 1986 and 1999, the number was only 1 out of 100,000.

This latest report comes after one a few years ago showing almost 500 babies born alive in Canada after failed abortions and left to die.

Previously, the blog Run with Life has reported that, from 2000 to 2009, 491 babies have been born alive following a failed abortion procedure, and subsequently left to die. And those are only the ones that are recorded by Statistics Canada.

The blog explains that “there were 491 abortions, of 20 weeks gestation and greater, that resulted in live births. This means that the aborted child died after it was born. These abortions are coded as P96.4 or ‘Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus and newborn’.

The Born Alive Infants Protection Act in the United States, signed into law by pro-life President George W. Bush, protects such babies in the U.S. and it came into existence after pro-life nurse Jill Stanek noticed babies born alive and left to die at his Chicago-area hospital.

This issue is still controversial given that pro-abortion President Barack Obama repeatedly failed to support the bill approved in the Illinois legislature to provide appropriate medical care and protection for such babies. There has been question as to whether the Obama administration is enforcing the law as it appears Planned Parenthood may be selling fully-intact babies who were born alive after failed abortions.
