Residents of a small German town are in shock after police discovered the bodies of as many as eight dead babies inside an apartment.

Police said they are looking for a 45-year-old woman believed to be the mother, according to the New York Post.

The dead babies’ bodies were found covered in blankets and placed in plastic bags in the apartment in Wallenfels, Germany; but reports are unclear about who first found them earlier this week.

“The bodies have been under examination since the early hours of the morning. The process will take some time due to the bad conditions [of the bodies] in certain cases,” police told German news outlet The Local. “Results are not to be expected before early next week.”

Several reports say a couple with several children had lived in the apartment but recently separated.

Neighbors described the family as “nice people,” and one said the mother had mentioned having “several miscarriages,” according to The Local.

The mayor of the town, Jens Korn, said he knew the family who lived in the apartment, according to the Post.

“I am speechless,” Korn said. “We are a small, lively community with 2,800 inhabitants, who all know each other. We are very emotional over this and are asking ourselves, ‘Was there something we could have done? Could we have helped?’”
