Colorado Lawmakers Urge Health Dept to Investigate Planned Parenthood For Selling Aborted Babies

Today, Colorado Rep. Dan Nordberg (R-HD 14) sent a letter to Dr. Larry Wolk, the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), requesting an investigation of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains regarding their participation in the harvesting and sale of aborted babies’ body parts. In total, 29 Colorado lawmakers signed Rep. Nordberg’s letter to Dr. Wolk.

In July, multiple videos surfaced showing Planned Parenthood executives negotiating the sale of aborted babies, admitting to using partial-birth abortions to supply intact body parts and taking steps to cover it up. In the fourth video, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains’ Vice President and Medical Director, Dr. Savita Ginde, meets with actors posing as buyers from a human biologics company to discuss a potential partnership to procure fetal organs.  Click here to watch the video exposing Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains.

The letter from the Colorado lawmakers reads, “On behalf of our constituents and the people of Colorado, we request that your Department exercise its authority to initiate an investigation of all Planned Parenthood Federation of America affiliates operating in Colorado for violations of all applicable state and federal laws and to take necessary legal action to end such practices. Investigations have been initiated in multiple states to ensure Planned Parenthood Federation of America affiliates are in compliance with the law. We ask your office to coordinate with Governor John Hickenlooper, and any other appropriate state agencies, to do the same in Colorado.”

Colorado statutes says the following about the consequences of violating “fetal tissue” donation laws: “Any physician or institution that violates subsection (2) of this section shall be fined by the state registrar not more than ten thousand dollars, depending upon the severity of the violation.” It adds, “The department of public health and environment may promulgate rules related to enforcement activities necessary to implement subsections (2) and (3) of this section.” (C.R.S 25-2-111.5)

Additionally, federal law says it is illegal for “any person to knowingly acquire, receive, or otherwise transfer any human fetal tissue for valuable consideration if the transfer affects interstate commerce.” (42 U.S.C. 289g-2 & C.R.S. 25-2-111.5) Unfortunately, the Associated Press reported that the spokesman for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Mark Sally, said the agency does not plan to investigate Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains because of “the ongoing congressional investigation.”

Rep. Nordberg responded and said, “Planned Parenthood is not above the law. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has a duty to enforce state statutes and I expect them to do their job, regardless of any congressional investigation. A civilized society cannot allow unethical and illegal medical practices such as the harvesting of aborted human organs and babies for monetary gain. I would hope that even proponents of abortion would agree to that much.”

The request for the investigation comes at the same time as pro-life groups like Colorado Citizens for Life are drawing attention to how Colorado State University has purchased aborted baby parts from Planned Parenthood for research.
