In France, the bodies of five dead babies have been found hidden in a freezer and one in a portable cooler. The babies were discovered in the town of Louchats after a father called the police claiming he found a dead newborn in a thermally insulated container. Then when police arrived they found four more babies in a large freezer regularly used by the man’s family.

Unbelievably, his wife allegedly gave birth to the babies within the last 48 hours but kept it from her husband. The man was arrested immediately for questioning and the wife was rushed to the hospital. Television channel BFMTV reported that the mother was hospitalized at Pellegrin Hospital in Bordeaux for gynecological and psychiatric examinations. However, a police spokeswoman said that the woman “does not appear to have a history of mental illness”.

According to the Daily Mail, the husband was said to be “absolutely devastated and shaking uncontrollably” when the discoveries were made. Philip Carreyre, the mayor of Louchats, commented about the discovery.

He said, “I will not say anything about this. The only thing I can point out is that these are good people perfectly integrated in the town.” A relative of the father said that he wasn’t aware that the woman was pregnant and other locals said the same. One resident said, “Knowing them it is just unbelievable. They are discreet people who never posed any problems. Just people who get up every morning and go to work. We’re all just stunned.”

The couple’s two daughters aged 13 and 15 were present when the first body was discovered. Now the girls are in the care of the police and DNA tests are being performed to confirm the babies’ relation to the woman.

A 35-year-old mother was hospitalised in a psychiatric ward after police on Thursday found the bodies in her house – four of them in a freezer.

Her 40-year-old husband, a farm worker, was charged Saturday with failing to report a crime and possession of the body of a homicide or involuntary manslaughter victim.

He is believed to have known about the baby corpses in the freezer.

However, it was the father who found a thermal bag containing the corpse of another baby earlier in the week at the family home and alerted police, a source close to the investigation told AFP.

The child is thought to have been born Tuesday night and – according to one of the mother’s rare statements to investigators – “the baby was born viable”, deputy prosecutor Anne Kayanakis said.

Investigators subsequently discovered the bodies of four other babies in a freezer at the home in the southwest of the country. The parentage of the children was still being confirmed via testing.

In 2010, France made international headlines after a 47-year-old French woman was charged with killing eight of her own children over the course of the last 20 years. The woman, Dominique Cottrez, wrapped two of her babies in plastic bags and had been “systematically killing her babies since 1988.”

Tragically, two of the bodies were discovered hidden in a house for more than 20 years. The London Telegraph reported that Cottrez admitted to killing the newborns because she didn’t want any more children and didn’t want to see a doctor about getting a means of contraception.
