Last week NRL News Today reported on a Norwegian man charged with slipping an abortifacient into a drink consumed by his girlfriend. This second attempt succeeded at killing the unborn child in March 2014. The baby was twelve weeks gestational age.

Today a court in western Norway sentenced the man to six years in prison. Adresseavisen, a local newspaper, reported he was also ordered to pay the woman $24,100 in damages.

According to reporter Ian Sparks

The man, who along with his ex-girlfriend has not been named, admitted charges of inflicting serious bodily harm and to terminating a pregnancy without the mother’s consent.

He told the court in Trondheim: “I really didn’t want another baby with her.

“I had a bad conscience and felt remorse about my actions, but I thought that it was the only way out.”

As we reported, the woman testified at a prior hearing, “He tried several times to convince me to have an abortion but it was not an option for me.”

9news reported that the man purchased the abortifacients online. The first time he told the woman that they were painkillers. According to Sparks when the first attempt “failed,” the man grew worried the child would be born with disabilities.

He then “bought a new batch of pills, and mixed them into a smoothie,” according to 9news. “She drank the smoothie, suffered abdominal cramps, and miscarried her baby.”

Her doctor “prescribed tests following the miscarriage and alerted police when the results came in”—that the miscarriage was caused by abortion-inducing drugs—Sparks reported.

The man has not yet decided whether to appeal the verdict.
