A California man has reportedly shot his wife to death in a so-called “mercy killing” — claiming he did so to alleviate the pain and suffering she endured because of her dementia. According to neighbors of 72-year-old JC Canfield, he killed his wife, 72-year old Joann Canfield, because she was dealing with advanced dementia and had been hurting herself around the house.

News reports say Canfield shot his spouse to death in the head and then turned himself in to authorities claiming he mercy killed his wife and left roses next to her side after she had shot her.

jccanfield“He told us that he decided to end his wife’s life to end her suffering.  He said it was something they had spoken about,” Alameda Police Sergeant Rick Bradley told KPIX 5.

Neighbors say Joann’s recent stay at a nursing home was short lived.

“She was running from the monsters she was seeing, so he thought it was best to put her in the nursing home.  And he was really happy to bring her home,” neighbor Bridget Milet said.

JC is also very ill according to those neighbors.

“To hear he did that is sad, but it’s understanding (sic).  She was definitely sick, and he was worried he wouldn’t find anybody else to take care of her if something happened to him,” neighbor Rosa Flores said.
