34 Years of China’s One-Child Policy: 400 Million Abortions, 37 Million Sex-Selection Abortions

September 25th, 2014 marks the 34th year since China’s enforcement of the brutal One-Child Policy. As a result of the policy 400 million babies have lost their lives and 37 million baby girls were killed, due to the Asian culture’s practice of favoring boys over girls.

In light of this, we at All Girls Allowed—in Jesus’ name simply love her, are shocked and heartbroken to hear the news that San Francisco’s Supervisor David Chiu’s proposal to lift bans on sex-selective abortions has been passed. The approval of this resolution removes a pregnant woman’s last weapon she could use to fight for her baby girl’s right to live.

picchina16b2Whether Mr. Chiu likes to face the truth or not, favoring men over women, which leads to Gendercide, is not just a stereotype of Asian culture, but a fact of life. In China, when the gender of a baby is identified, “It is a boy” brings praise and relief; “It is a girl” can become the most deadly words for the baby girl and for her mother.

There is no evidence showing that by simply coming to America, or growing up in America, the Asian population’s deeply rooted value and practice of their culture has changed. Today, for every six baby girls that are scheduled to be born in China, the sixth girl would be aborted or killed right after birth, and every sixth boy would grow up with no wife to marry.

This causes China to account for 60% of world sex trafficking. Statistics show that in Asian American populations, if a family’s first child is a girl, the gender imbalance ratio is the same for the second child as it is for the first child in China. In the end, the only reason a baby girl was not allowed to be born is because she was a girl.

Anyone familiar with the All Girls Allowed mission knows that the One-Child Policy has resulted in Gendercide, the systematic killing of one sex: baby girls. Infanticide, late-stage abortions, forced abortions, forced sterilizations, sex-selective abortions, and the trafficking and kidnapping of girls are all tools used to further the effective Gendercide of girls.

However, the policy has also broken families. It instills fear within each family member, and with that fear, people act out in awful ways. Many put pressure on women to abort their girls for boys. Husbands often threaten divorce as punishment for his wife when she refuses to abort. Family and friends begin to belittle their pregnant women for wanting to keep their babies. Families begin to thrive on resentment, and abusive relationships develop where love instead should prosper.

As an Asian in America myself, I am not proud of this cultural practice. However, pretending this practice does not exist does not stop the brutal slaughter of Asian baby girls and attacks on their mothers; rather, it condones it and encourages it.

If Mr. Chiu truly wants to show care, to support and protect a woman’s freedom to choose, I challenge Mr. Chiu to openly condemn China’s One-Child Policy which deprives women’s basic reproductive rights. Furthermore, instead of being remembered by history as an Asian man who encourages the killing of baby girls, I invite Mr. Chiu to join the movement to end Gendercide!
