Today Show Host Savannah Guthrie: Only Response to New Baby is “Gratitude and Praise”

We’ve talked about Today Show co-host Savannah Guthrie’s pregnancy in the context of some remarkable episodes that wonderfully illuminated the world of “Hotel Uterus,” as Guthrie whimsically put it and the incredible development of the “guest.” (See nrlc.cc/1r98Xr8 and nrlc.cc/1r99GbM.)

Ms. Guthrie went on maternity leave Monday and on her last day the Today Show crew showered her with love, gifts, and advice.

The program also put together a fascinating time-lapse video. In a mere 45 seconds we see the development of her child, from when he or she was a “baby bump” to when they had become one large passenger about to officially exit their temporary home.

savannahguthrieSuch bing-bing, baby-from-early-days-to-near-delivery videos are not new. NRL News Today has featured a number of them. My favorite is “Cute as a button: A sweet video about the unborn child’s nine month journey.”

But the audience for these videos is not in the tens of millions, the total size of all those who at one time or another have seen Guthrie document her pregnancy over the past five months. As such, the impact of the way she enthusiastic, joyful way she talked about her baby and her family (not just husband, Mike, but also, in particular, her own mother) is difficult to exaggerate.

Please watch the video, but also ponder this expression of gratitude from her blog.

One of the most surprising and heartening aspects of going on this journey in such a public way was the real love and support I experienced from this amazing community of TODAY viewers. I want you to know I felt every hug and treasured every moment of kindness. There is something so amazing and uplifting about getting to witness how people can be so genuinely joyful for another human being – for no other reason than their goodness. Their kindness says far more about them, and their good hearts, than it does about me. In a society that can sometimes be cruel or caustic or cynical, what a ray of light.

This has been the most thrilling journey of my life so far. And I know this moment will fade so quickly when compared to holding this new little baby in my arms. I take none of it for granted. God has blessed me beyond measure. At 42 years old, I had every reason to think I may have missed my chance. I don’t know why things worked out as they did. But there is only one possible response: to be full of gratitude and praise, and to point to the source of this incredible blessing.
